Decent, affordable therapist? Hello Redditfolk,
After much contemplation and insistence by friends and family, I've decided the time is right for me to go to therapy....

If you don’t mind answering, where in London do you live? As the therapy treatments available range from borough to borough If you’re willing to do CBT over the internet, you can try [IESO](https://www.iesohealth.com/en-gb) If you’re more keen for face to face counselling/therapy and you live in Islington or Camden, consider self-referring to [ICOPE](https://www.icope.nhs.uk/) See your GP for more suggestions as well as I’m sure they will be able to point you to more local services

There's nothing to laugh about. I don't have any recommendations but good luck sorting out your phobias. They can be very limiting. Hope you get the help you need
Hanlmor replied:
Definitely no laughing here! If you are looking to address issues around phobias then you will likely be looking for someone who offers CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). Many people suffer from a wide range of phobias so don’t think you are alone. In terms of a recommendation for a therapist I will DM you with some I know of.

Having no other hypnotherapy experience to compare against, I can’t really say if she is good but Jean Watson in Chapel A got me from having a real fear of public speaking to confidently delivering a best mans speech to a couple of hundred people and actually enjoying it.

If you struggle to afford private therapy, you could try to approach your GP. They might be able to refer you to primary care psychological therapies, which often use CBT, as someone else mentioned. Phobias etc respond really well to CBT type treatment. :) Also, I don't think anyone would laugh at you, it's more common than you'd think. Well done for being open about it, and I hope you find the help you would like. Best wishes and good luck!

Firstly, all the best to you on this journey and serious props for deciding to try to do something about it.
To go alongside the other options people have given - there's also the IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) route, which is accessed through your GP, but some services can do self referrals. All you'll need to know is which service covers your area, which is determined by where your GP is. They're usually quite CBT focused as that's the IAPT model (which is helpful for phobias), but I'll always put a suggestion forward for ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy) if it's on offer, as I really like working with that model.
A quick google suggests its this trust, which should be the city centre: [https://www.leedscommunityhealthcare.nhs.uk/our-services-a-z/leeds-mental-wellbeing-service/home/](https://www.leedscommunityhealthcare.nhs.uk/our-services-a-z/leeds-mental-wellbeing-service/home/)
I work over in Liverpool, so not so familiar with the services in Leeds.

Check out HealthWise, that's where I have counselling and they're all very good

You can get therapy for free on the NHS without having to go through your GP. Can self refer by contacting them here: https://www.nhs.uk/Services/clinics/MapsAndDirections/DefaultView.aspx?id=104803 In assessment you’ll have a quick chat with a therapist and see what they recommend, and can say yes/no as you please. As another suggested, babcp website will have a good directory. Good luck! Cbt is very effective for phobias!

I already put it on another comment, but it’s worth applying through IAPT, I’m doing online CBT now with them and it’s going great! I highly recommend it, give me a DM if you have any questions if you want :)

Best of luck OP. I needed help a long time ago to deal with my fear of crowds. Phobias are an irrational fear and many people have them. I hope you find the help you are looking for and cut down on the leccy bills.

I was referred to the psychologists at Malham house by my GP via a psychiatric evaluation and received a course of CBT and then DBT with some of my issues being phobia and I would recommend the service. It depends on whether you feel you need help learning how to manage your mental health which is what behavioural therapy is about, or whether you think you need to unpick the causes. The NHS does not have a ton of services related to the latter but the former can be very helpful.
Also my first psychologist at Malham house was not right for me at all so I asked to switch which they were more then happy to, and I got along with the second one much better. So if you can't connect with whoever you're assigned don't feel bad asking to change because it happens all the time. It doesn't mean the whole service is bad you just need to find the right fit. Best of luck to you, phobias absolutely suck and are no laughing matter. You can totally beat them though!

it really depends what area you're in - low cost community counselling services offer treatment on a sliding scale but most will require once a week sessions as it's usually more productive
