Good, old school barbershop? As the title suggests, does anyone know of a good barbershop in Madison?
I'm talking old dude, straight blade, the whole nine yards.
College Barbers are actual master barbers and will straight razor your neck in the back.
belandil replied:
Jack's Barber Shop, 2509 University Ave, yes on the old dude, although I forget whether he uses a straight blade.
Kurtze replied:
I've been to both College and Wayne's. Been very satisfied with both.
joshawnard replied:
Northgate Barber Shop on N Sherman Ave. Ask for Mike. WIll not disappoint. The guy looks about 70 and smells of tobacco. Very traditional.
mradtke66 replied:
Monona Barber Shop on Monona drive. I want to say $16 for a simple hair cut, includes straight razor for side burns and neck clean up.
Siaphan replied:
I don't know about "old dude" but wayne's barbershop at 420 park street is pretty good. I go there whenever I'm back in Madison to get my hair cut.
nfromm replied:
Terry's Westgate Barbers.
vatoniolo replied:
There's an old school barber that operates out of the basement of the concourse that does a good job
papertrowel replied:
Either the shop on State (college barbers?) or Monroe (stadium barbers) probably fits the bill. I recommend The Barbershop on Junction Rd. if you have the means of getting there. More of a salon type place, but free peanuts and a great cut and wash for $11 cash.
djfoundation replied:
what about the Buckeye Barber shop? also the one on the corner of Commercial and North, though I'm not sure I'd go in there..
dmasteRR replied:
I'd definitely go with Cha Cha Beauty & Barber off of Willy St.

I've been going to Hair Forum on University for the past few years and have always had good results. Usually runs about $21 plus tip. Ask for Nathan or Dan.
vatoniolo replied:
Both Thorpes and Chacha are awesome, but not cheap. If I were you I'd go there with $50 expecting to spend it all (it'll be $35-40 but you should tip well) and you'll quickly learn that you get what you pay for

Vici Aveda School: the student who's given me great cuts this whole year is named Bao. She's graduating 3/18/14, though, and already has a job lined up at a salon in Fitchburg. So don't delay. I've gotten great cuts at Aveda for nearly four years, with only one botched job. When you find someone good like Bao, you get great cuts 'til they graduate, and at your last appointment before he or she graduates, you ask them to refer you to someone else they know is highly skilled. I dont recommend going without a referral. That's how my one bad cut came about. My cuts have never taken long; I hear womens cut/color jobs can take hours. $12 for a mens cut, or only $6 for the earliest slot of the day.
bobbaddeley replied:
I've been going to Ken's Barbershop for a couple years, and he's great. Just off Wash. across from the walgreens. He's been doing cuts for five decades and taught at MATC. Nice guy, $20 for a cut, and he does it well. He even uses a straight razor around the ears and back of the neck.
Icarus_Jones replied:
Try the barbershop next to Chiefs on Cottage Grove rd (across from the VFW). I can't remember the name of it right now, but she is great. $13 for a normal cut, $7 or $8 if you come in before 9 am. She does a great job, and is fun to talk to. Her politics are a little nutty (though she might say the same of mine), and she's not afraid to talk about them, but if you can get past that, it's a great haircut for a great price. Oh yeah, the one drawback is she's only open on weekdays.
rustysqueezebox replied:
I also grew tired of feeling like a widget on an assembly line when i went to chain -clips, -cuts, -clipz places where their goal is to get you in and out in less than 10 min. Alan koa is fantastic. Not cheap, but ive learned you really get what you pay for when it comes to haircuts. The stylists know what they're doing and they do it well.

Went to Gteat Clips in Fitchburg once, and the lady stylist there looked horrible, like she smokes more than she eats. Her lack of care for her own appearance really showed in her haircuts for others. I noped outta there muy rapido.

TIL you guys spend too much on haircuts. I buy a new set of clippers about every 5 years for ~$30, and I've actually gotten pretty decent at giving myself a real haircut instead of the basic buzz. Benefit of growing up with a dad in the military.

I like the work of College Barber on State St. They don't throw in the shampoo unless you ask. I have been looking to check out Thorps on Atwood, and Cha Cha on Williamson

Nogginz near State and Gilman is pretty good. $17 for men and I've liked every haircut I've gotten there. I have really curly hair though, so maybe they're shit at cutting normal hair, I wouldn't know.
exjentric replied:
I've never had a bad experience at the Aveda teaching salon in University Square. I know teaching schools sound scary, but those people are really careful. Plus you get a head massage. I have long hair, so it costs me $12, but they might be cheaper for short men's cuts, I'm not sure. The downside: it does take a long time because they're so careful; it's not a get in, get out kind of place.

Zach at Cha Cha Beauty and Barber. My previous barber took maternity leave last year. I went to a lot of barbers in Madison on a lot of different peoples recommendations. Zach was far and away the best, and he doesn't charge as much as most. I can't speak to his skill with beards, though.

I feel like it depends a bit on your scene and price. If you have any East Side in you, I'd check out Ritual Barbers. I've never been there personally (don't have a beard) but I used to get my hair cut by Lue when he was at Thorp's. He's passionate and lively and a good communicator, which is pretty key for getting a good cut. Again, can't speak from experience re: the beard, but knowing him / his scene I would imagine that's right up his alley.

I get my hair done at [Reanna's Salona](http://www.reannasalona.com/), and I've seen her do straight razor work (sometimes people come in to get stuff done while my hair is processing). I've (male) been going to Stephanie at Cha Cha for a while now. Never had a bad cut. Improves every time, in fact. She can definitely cut a lady's hair as well, if that's more you. If you're a guy, you can also go down to the A level of the Concourse Hotel downtown. The lady down there takes walk ins, is a no bullshitter brandy drinker and breeds/shows dogs. Real hoot to chat with, and a skilled user of a blade.

I had a shave at cha cha. It was an enjoyable experience. It wasn't the closest shave of my life, but was still a fairly smooth shave. I also have thick facial hair. I also am a wetshaver(soap, brush and safety razor) so i get pretty smooth shaves normally. No razorburn and felt pretty good after. The barber also used a very nice pre de province aftershave balm that smelled pretty good. This would be a nice place to go for a shave and should be pretty relaxing pre wedding as long as you aren't too stressed out by a stranger with an incredibly sharp blade on your face and neck. Congratulations on your wedding. Edit:This place is in madison BTW. So would be a drive(30-45 minutes).
