I got $90 back on the routine maintenance of my system a few years ago which more than paid for it.

I use a friend (known 20+ years) that has his masters license and will be cheaper than any of the companies. He has a day job but can do evenings/weekends.

Automatic Climate. Use them, they were referred to my by Angies List. They quoted my HVAC for 6 k. JAMES River quoted was at 12 k, Michael and Sons did around 10 k, and West End heating and Air was about 8 k. The Automatic Climate people were friendly, gave us many options, and have been exceptional with follow ups. The 6 k was for a mid range a.c. unit, duct work, big yearly checkups, and a new hi tech thermostat. James River and Michael & Son's were way to pricey plus they wanted to pitch to both the wife and I together (a sales tactic were they pitch to the wife and force the husband to agree).

Short Pump Heating and Air, but since you don't live in the promised land, you'll need someone else. Many of my coworkers (commercial hvac design engineers) rave about Howell's, who ALMOST got my business, 2 nd only to SPH&A.

We've used Eveready Service Experts for years. Good work, don't know how they compare on prices.

If you have retrofit AC, consider hidden duct mini-splits. I'm getting rid of ducting in my closets, a compact car from the attic, a leak causing compressor from the roof (new one bolts to side of house), a 1950 s boiler and all the radiators/low hanging basement pipes. Then I can finish both the basement and attic. Every zone has individual temperature settings. Cost the same as a new coil and raising the basement radiator pipes and nearly doubles my usable square footage.
