Good food for Chessie??
Can anyone recommend a good solid food for Chessies? My 2 year old has been on a few different brands and just switched to one after going into...

Great thank you for all the info I have been researching different store bought and homemade recipes too it can get overwhelming so its always nice to get feed back from other Chessie owners. Our first Chessie I fed Nutro for pretty much her whole life and she lived a very healthy 14 1/2 years, not too bad!! We got another Chessie but she is very picky about her food and won't eat just anything, I tryed the Nutro again and she wasn't fod of the flavor so we tried several different brands and ended up using Royal Canine which has been ok but lately she has had more gas and soft stools so I decided to change brands, went to Petco and was approached by a sales rep for Nutro promoting their new Holistic food and decided to try that. She gobbled it up like candy! I thought wow maybe this will be good for her. It claims many good ingredience I was excited to find one she loves. I always like to research stuff so I googled about this brand and was shocked to read that Nutro has been killing animals! Ever since the Mars CANDY company bought Nutro 3 years ago there have been problems I will not risk my baby life or health so I am taking it back and will never feed any of their products to her!! I would rather make her food or buy something more natural than to risk hurting her. Its hard with the better choices for the cost time and money are an issue but she is so worth it, Thanks again for the comments gotta LOVE our Chessies they are the BEST!!

Try the aunt jennies if you have time contraints but really with BARF there is no cooking or mixing. You just give you dog a meaty bone. Please, read the book by Ian Billinghurst Give your dog a Bone, he has since come out with some other books. Each dog has their own likes and dislikes. I start by keeping a journal of what they like. Dogs know what they need and if your dog is not eatting there is something in that food that they don't need. They can smell the poisons in processed dog food. Anything with Meat meal in it is most likely processed rancid meat. I saw the meatmeal truck pull up to the back of the Bill Jack plant in Berlin MD several years ago. They were unloading shepp that were almost a blue color, tell me is that healthy. Also dead zoo animals, road kill and many other disgusting things are used for meatmeal. I had a Borzoi that bloated many years ago and that is what got me doing the BARF thing, I have never turned back. So, throw your Chessie a few RAW chiken wings to start you won't believe the reaction. Never defrost in the microwave always defrost room temp or in cold water. My dogs like their chicken parts room temp. I even feed my 8 lb ML Dachshund BARF. Good Luck and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions, Deirdre

Thanks Amy, My hubby has been out of work since last OCT. BARF can actually be cheaper if you shop around. I use raw chicken, I get from the grocery store not the pet store. Usually, backs, necks or leg quaters, veggies they get what ever I cook for us and raw carrotts and apples for snacks. Good luck email me if you have any questions, Aunt Jennies is great but can be expensive. I use it if a dog is sick, a senior, for my little 8 lb doxie or when I am on the road at dog events. Cheers, Deirdre and my Chessie Rhonda

Yes, Switch to the BARF diet, Bones and Raw Food or Biologicaly Apropiate Raw Food. I give my Rhonda and my ML Dachshund Chicken backs, necks, leg quaters,or pork necks, only raw and defrosted at room temp. I also give them fruit, veggies, cottage cheese, raw goats milk, soft fried eggs, nuts, whole grain bread and anything else that they desire as long as it is healthy and raw, I don't feed any treats except apples or carrotts. Occassionaly, I will give a Merrick Moozle but not very often. I also teach them to eat in their crates on a mat that is just for eatting. I have been doing BARF for 18 years, I only had one problem. One of my borzois got a piece of a shank bone caught back in his jaw joint and his mouth wouldn't close, I got it out on my own and he was fine. I do always remain in the room during feeding time just in case something happens.
