Thanks so much Melissa Gentile-Menard. I studied with Leslie Everest of MotherWit and have practiced with Rivka Cymbalist of Montreal Birth Companions - both of whom have brought to my skills what I share alongside you as your birth assistant. Please do visit my website at MontrealMT.com under the menu tab Mothers Therapy for more of what I offer. My cell is 514-813-8566. References available.

Call the association! AFAIK, it's against every kind of Canadian prenatal best practices to reject a woman who is three months pregnant for health care, especially with the excuse that she's too far along. They should be able to refer her to a midwife who will sit down with her. http://www.rsfq.qc.ca

The Herzl family medicine clinic at the Jewish general has a lot of docs and residents and she may be able to get a doc there. I had my first baby there and I met many great, open minded doctors on the team. It is really hard to get a midwife even a month into pregnancy. I have been in a similar situation in the past. Good luck.

My wife and I are in the process of moving to St John's (she grew up there) and are looking for references for midwives in the area....

Here's a link to what the canadian association of midwives says about midwifery in Newfoundland; http://www.canadianmidwives.org/newfoundland.htm Maybe there's a Newfoundland/St. John's resident who can give you a more detailed scoop.

I'm afraid there are not many contacts to be made in NL for midwives. Here's one... Avalon Midwifery Care Jayme Safine Phone: 709/738-4410 jsafine@yahoo.com She'll know if there are any other midwives in the area. Also there are a team of midwives who travel to NL, from NS. I can imagine the $ involved. Check out the Canadian Doula Website, they have more info http://www.canadiandoulas.com/newfoundland_m.htm I'm pretty sure the cost of the services are not covered under health care. Midwives usually have a sliding scale, we were going to be in for a bill of $2500 had we not moved to Ontario from NS at the end of the first trimester. Ultimately, it's worth it if it's within your means, otherwise you might want to try and find a DR who is like minded who would attend a homebirth or at the very least respect your views/wishes in the hospital setting. If you're already had a homebirth you're used to taking responsibility for decisions and you're familiar with informed choice. At this point, I think whatever the situation, you are a strong advocate for your wife and family and you could manipulate the situation to meet your family's needs. Best of luck! P.S. I'm jealous that you're moving to NL, the best people on the face of the planet! Enjoy some Fish and Brewis when you get there.
