I too recommend Vanderbilt Midwives and NOVA Birth Services. My doula was the awesome Megan Megan Fleeman. Both were so supportive of my VBAC.
Leslie T. replied:
Melan Francis and she can work in a hospital environment but really does homebirths unless there is an issue then it's a transfer She is also a family practitioner
Rebecca S. replied:
I used the Vanderbilt midwives in Nov 2013 and they cheered me on for a vbac! I hired Patsy George as my doula and have nothing but good things to say for her!
Ashley T. replied:
Vanderbilt Nurse Midwives 2 of my three VBACs have been with them. Franklin Road Midwives deliver at St. Thomas Midtown (formerly Baptist). There is a birthing center opening in Nashville late summer but they will not offer VBAC. Infinity Birthing Center in Cookeville or The Farm in Summertown if you can travel a bit.
Paige S. replied:
Hi! I'm a brand spanking new doula (read: very enthusiastic) and I'd love to meet with you when you're here! But if you'd prefer someone more experienced, my friend Kimberly Payne Lmt is wonderful!
Kimberly L. replied:
I would be more than happy to meet with her as well. https://www.facebook.com/170323612982066 Kimberly Payne LMT has all of my info. 615-630-4259 is the best way to reach me
Has anyone had a great experience with a doula they could recommend? I'm not over the top "earthy", but want a smoother, hopefully epidural-free birth this time around...

Thanks Kirby Byram, but I'm not a doula. I am a midwife though and definitely value their services. I would suggest Nova- a great group of knowledge caring ladies. I would also recommend using a midwife for your prenatal care and delivery. Vanderbilt has midwives as well as a free doula service available at delivery. Cole Family Practice on Lebanon Pike offers midwifery care with deliveries at Vanderbilt. Www.colefamilypractice.org Good luck!
Beth W. replied:
I agree with Nova Birth Services! good luck with the rest of your pregnancy! And you can pm me with any questions or anything. I'm a childbirth educator in Hermitage, and am happy to help point you in the right direction.

Nova Birth Services all the way!!! Used their doulas for both my births and also for childbirth education classes. They are awesome
Stephanie B. replied:
I also HIGHLY, highly, highly (!!!) recommend NOVA Birth Services. I have used their doula services and will never have a baby without them

I've heard there are some you can find through the Vanderbilt Midwives program. Check with Vandy hospital. I heard good things about the Vandy Midwives.

Vanderbilt Midwives!
Casey G. replied:
Also, Katie Richardson was my doula. She is amazing as well!
Carissa J. replied:
Sheryl Schafer and Talitha Mills are both great CPMs who attend home birth vbacs. Talitha even has an official OB backup. I loved my prenatal care with the Vandy midwives, but still ended up with a possibly unnecessary c-section that I'm still sad about, 2 years later. While I believe they are 100% supportive of vbacs, they still must adhere to hospital policies, many of which are not VBAC friendly.
Daphne M. replied:
Dr Brown does vbacs. Kathy Williams and The Farm midwives too.
Melissa K. replied:
Sheryl Shafer all the way - home birth midwife. I had my VBAC with her after the Vandy midwives who I was with for my unnecessary csection told me I would never have a VBA unless I had a six pounder. VBACed a 42 week 10 pound healthy baby boy because Sheryl believed my body was created to give birth!
Jennifer N. replied:
Sheryl Shafer is amazing! She did my hbavbaccc!
Carissa J. replied:
Oh, also, Sarah, if you are more comfortable with an OB, I've heard very good things about Dr. John Wilters. I think he attends both at Centennial and Baptist.
Melissa S. replied:
Had a successful VBAC with the Vandy midwives and Doula Heidi - Expecting New Life Birth Services as my doula.
Rachel E. replied:
Dr. Okifor (sp?) is right by stonecrest and he once told me he'd consider backing up a midwife. I'd go there if I wanted an OB. I had a successful homebirth with Marilyn Greene. She's very VBAC supportive. Yes, I know the history, yes, I'd still choose her again without hesitation.
Katie D. replied:
I did my VBAC almost 2 years ago with Vanderbilt Nurse Midwives, after trying a few OB's I felt they were the only ones who would truly support me 100% & really let me go for it. I was successful with my VBAC & had a great experience. I LOVE them! I am with them now, expecting to deliver by February 2 nd with my 2 nd VBAC. I also used Jeannie Johnson Casey for my doula, she is super knowledgable & supportive.
Sarah K. replied:
Sheryl Shafer, does anyone know if she only midwifes for homebirths or does she midwife in a hospital setting? The reason I ask is because I live about an hour away from Nashville hospitals so I would feel more comfortable being closer to a hospital with a VBAC should any complications arise.
Heather H. replied:
I agree with checking into Dr. Spetalnick if insurance doesn't cover the Vandy midwives. I was with the Vandy midwives for my VBAC, but Dr. Spetalnick actually ended up delivering my son, because we were dealing with fetal distress and needed to deliv...See More

Michelle S. replied:
Gaylea McDougal is an amaaaazing doula and monitrice!!!!! Loved her times infinity! I went to the Vandy midwives as I couldn't find a homebirth midwife who would do a vbac with no previous vaginal births.
Nicole P. replied:
Carissa Kali Jordan could mention Homebirth midwives in the area who take vbac clients:)
Kendra D. replied:
Women's group of Franklin, Dr. Bell or Dr. Roupe. Also Vanderbilt midwives are great, especially Linda Rose-Hughlett. My homebirth midwife for my second vbac this time is Sheryl Shafer and I LOVE HER! Good luck:)
Amy M. replied:
I also used Vanderbilt Midwives (West End) for my Vbac and went through Nine Months and Beyond for my doula and lactation services. Lauren Drees is my midwife and Sarah McKay was my doula. Love both of them!!
Merrill Elizabeth Durham is amazing and a long time friend. I think you would really love her and her coaching style.

I'm looking for resources (midwives, doulas, classes, etc...) in Memphis, TN, for a friend new to the area... any leads?
Sharon H. replied:
Staci Thomas is a CNM in Memphis who delivers at the Med
Michelle C. replied:
Nikole Gettings at Choices is an alum and though she doesn't attend births right now, she can help steer you in the right direction and she does offer Gyn services.
Andrea B. replied:
The only two CNMs in Memphis I know that are involved in clinical practice are Staci Thomas at the med and Nicole Gettings at Choices. Hope this helps!
Message from someone in Chattanooga, looking for a PP Doula in Nashville, ASAP!

NOVA Birth Services. I recommend Megan Fleeman or Elise Buckner. They are really great at postpartum care. They have extensive experience. Elise is actually very close to becoming a homebirth midwife.
Any doula recommendations? Leave their name and website here please!

Gaylea McDougal! Although I may have seen that she is now only taking repeat clients, but she is an amazing resource and may be able to recommend! Definitely consider taking Alpha childbirth classes!! Congrats girl:)
Kristen B. replied:
Bethany Schenk McAtee Whether or not you decide to get an epidural, I'm so glad you're planning on a doula! Yes, Will & I took extensive birth classes together, & yes, he was very supportive, but we both loved having our doula there & will definitely have a doula for the rest of our births!
Jennifer M. replied:
I used Rising Moon Birth Services - Sarah was great! Very supportive & a great help.
If you or anyone you know has had a doula while in labor or if you know someone personally that is please let me know! Doing a little research for school
