Flour Power does amazing cakes. (I've always found Swiss to be really disappointing.)

Shake Sugary in the Bywater is fantastic. Dawn was so great to work with and I got so many comments on how delicious the cake was at my wedding. They are also much cheaper than most other places. Win!

Haydels or Gambinos are good bakeries. My first thought for a Nola cake was Doberge cake and there's also a bakery called "Debbie Does Doberge" that you might find yummy cakes at

You can get year-round king cakes from Haydel's if that's what you want. Doberge is a good suggestion as well - Gambin's was the original doberge baker, I believe, but Debbie Does Doberge is more creative with flavors. If you just want chocolate on chocolate, Gambino's will suffice. If neither of those cakes are what you want, Shake Sugary is my regular cake recommendation with Cake Cafe following right behind them.

Shake sugary, cake cafe doesn't really like doing cakes. They'll do em for regulars but cakes are not their MO.

Try Haydel's Bakery. They offer the Blackout cake which is chocolate on chocolate. You have to order it though, they don't keep it in a case. They also have King Cakes year round but you will have to order that as well. They also also have doberge cakes which they usually always have on hand. Debbie Does Doberge is the hot new doberge place but I haven't tried it. I think Gambino's is terrible. Still riding off the namesake from years ago. Try the Russian Cake at Haydel's if you love crazy, Nola desserts. But only if you like the anise flavor. Cannoli's at Angelo Brocato's and Spumoni with an espresso is the reason for living. (Sorry I have a huge sweet tooth and I'm pregnant FWIW)...

We love Coral Baja! We go every year. We stopped by in March to see how things were going and it looks fantastic. Can't wait for next year.:) We love the atmosphere of San Jose over Cabo!

Don't use your points. IMHO. Go to www.applevacations.com and you can get great package deals including flight/resort/transport to and from airport for about the same price as the all inclusive fees.

We LOVE Playa Grande. We use RCI to stay here. I love it because its on its own beach. http://www.playa-grande-cabo.com/ We do not do all inclusive because she feel obligated to just stay where you're at. I like getting out and trying places. We have a favorite taco stand that is far off the tourist map we go to almost everyday we are there for lunch.

Fiesta Americana is great I always stay there, great spa too! Love their in house lotion
Melanie P. replied:
We stayed at Playa Grande in March. Its a really nice resort and we didnt have to do the all inclusive which made us happy. I think it's too expensive plus we like going out and trying all the local restaurants.

Coral Baja (San Jose del Cabo) is very nice. Swimming there is a big NO due to the dangerous undertow, but the pool is awesome! One section has a swim-up bar. Happy hour has both adult & non-alcohol beverages. If it's been rebuilt since the hurricane last year, Mega store with groceries & clothes (& many folks who want to talk to you about time shares) is a short walk away, if you'd rather not drive. Downtown San Jose is beautiful - see the historic areas! Caveat: Not sure how things are since the hurricane. Maybe others on this site have more info on that.
