eatinstingrays replied:
How close to SDSU would you like to be? A lot of European exchange students I know were surprised by how spaced out everything is here (and for comparison, SD County is 1/4 the size of Denmark). I assume you're 21 or over? That's generally the youngest that car rental services will allow (I think one lets you rent at 20, not sure). There might be issues with renting though, they usually charge an extra rate if you're under 25. I remember renting a car for a couple days when I was 22 and had to pay an extra $25/day. Hertz, Budget, Enterprise, Avis are the major car rental companies I can think of, check out each one and see if they have options that work for you.
CodyKyle replied:
Just be careful when searching, there are so many scams in San Diego housing rentals it's just sickening (along with most major cities). Depending on how long you're staying, you may want to also look at www.Turo.com for rentals. It's like the AirBnB of cars. Good luck and use your best judgment and ask if you think you need to do a legit check.

I used rent.com and apartments.com to find all ours; my husband and I have moved three times. I would STRONGLY recommend you all coming out here on like, a weekend or something to actually look at apartments before signing a lease. There's just so many with so many different features and price ranges, it depends on your preferences. I live in mission valley and love it, however, it's pretty expensive. Your price range for the three of you is a little low considering even one bedrooms in SD could be as high as 3k (I wouldn't have said quite so much but I literally went to my leasing office two days ago to pick up a paackage and overheard an employee nearby talking with potential residents and he was saying it would be 3200 I believe for a one bed with a car garage... like wtf!). You can get a decent one bedroom for around 1500 (our first apt was a one bed in pb for 1300 ish) but for the theee of you, that may be pretttyyyy small. Two bed apts go for like, basically 1700 and up. A decent two bed with good amenities, like mine that has a washer and dryer, etc, will be about 2k a month at least. Btw this is all just from my own experience of looking and actually visiting many different places - each time we moved, I'd compile a list of at least 5 places with our requirements, then go physically look at them. So I've seen quite a few, but there's still soooo many apt complexes out there. I hope you all find something that suits you, good luck.

I'd look on Google maps near the airport - SFO - and check with companies around there. Whatever you get, I strongly suggest you get the renter's insurance! That means if there's any accident at all, the rental company 100% takes care of it. Definitely worth the added charge.

Rent close to where you’re staying. It’s more expensive from the airports. There’s usually a discount for long term. If you don’t carry insurance reconsider that as the rental purchase option gets expensive overtime. Don’t think you don’t need insurance of any kind. You do.

So a update on insurance if your gonna rent out your car. Let's just say route (A) you take liability insurance and you let the persons borrow your car. But you as registered owner are responsible for full liability. If something were to happen both friend and registered owner would have to convince claims adjuster of how you both know each other. Then claim adjuster would bring up insurance fraud. Now route (B) is go get commercial insurance from only a few certified insurance companies who have it on maui.

Other than 'fox' or 'payless' the quality of all other agencies is about the same. Just go with the cheapest.
Don't listen to other people about "airport fees." Only look at the total price you will pay when comparing agencies and locations. Off airport usually charges a bit more $/day and also factor in your time and taxi/uber costs.
Don't ever look at per day costs. Only look at total costs including fees. A quick look at SJC airport from august 10-20 is $360 USD for an intermediate.
The thing with American car rentals is that you can make as many reservations as you want since its noncommittal (no credit card required to book)
Also check if your credit card will provide you with insurance. Taking the agency's insurance is almost never worth it. I'm convinced they make most of their margins from selling insurance.
BTW, if you're committed to your trip, it might be good for you to book some other things right now before the BGP drops even more ;)

It seems like renting a car for a year would cost a lot more than just buying a fairly reliable car. A quick search suggests it starts at $450/month so if you're here for a year that's a budget of ~$5400 for a used car. You could not sell it for as much when you leave, but you'd probably only spend ~$2000 overall instead of the $5400+ for renting. The numbers I found came from [Enterprise](https://www.enterprise.com/en/car-rental/long-term.html) by the way, though I would not recommend that route.
Anyway, my wife and I are expecting our first child in a month and will be upgrading to a family vehicle so we are selling a reliable, used car. It is a manual. KBB suggests it is worth $4260. Let me know if you might be interested.

FilthyRichVagrant replied:
With a budget of $450, you will most likely not find a monthly rental. The lowest quote I’ve seen is about $700+ through Enterprise’s long-term program.
But not to worry! You have a few options.
Option 1:
As someone mentioned, buy a beater that runs, has aircon, and doesn’t have terrible gas mileage. Insure it for liability only.
Pros:
- No monthly payment after the initial fees associated with the purchase are paid for.
- Insurance might be cheap if you only get liability on it.
- You will win most of the time when your fellow drivers challenge you for a merge during traffic. No one wants to ding their Tesla on a ‘98 Camry.
- It’s a beater, but it’s YOUR beater. Hopefully not the bank’s.
- No limit on how much you drive it. If you drive the distance from here to the moon and back—and it still runs—no one will give you shit for it.
Cons:
- A beater has the potentiality to have a catastrophic mechanical failure and will likely cost you more on maintenance. Even a reliable Toyota can give up on you.
- No more car if you total it, since you would have it covered with only liability insurance.
- This one’s a challenge, seeing how 90% of Bay Area drivers drive like they just got a license yesterday: don’t hit a decently priced car, because your liability limits might be exceeded and you’ll pay for the rest of the damages to the other vehicle if found at-fault.
- The car you’ll have a budget for will have wheels. It will have an engine, a transmission, and other necessary components to make those wheels turn. It will also have at LEAST *a* seat. In other words, your car will probably be a huge pile of metal shit.
Option 2:
Lease a cheap base model Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, Ford, etc.
Pros:
- New car smell. Who doesn’t like that? I bet nine out of ten dentists approve too.
- Reliability will be less of a worry, and any major mechanical gremlins will be taken care of under the warranty.
- Only maintenance needed will be on routine stuff like oil changes, tire rotation, wiper blades, etc.
- If you like the car, you can buy it out at the end of the lease.
Cons:
- Yay, you now have to go haggle with a dealer and price out the lowest quote for insurance.
- Monthly payments will balloon if you roll your tax, reg, state, and other fees into the lease. If you don’t, you’ll pay at least $3K upfront to drive it off the lot. The lease payment will also depend on your Auto FICO score.
- You damage it, your insurance rates go up. If you don’t fix it and have excess wear/tear during turn-in, the leasing company will charge you an exorbitant fee.
- You don’t own the car at the end of the lease.
- You’re locked in for at least a yr, ideally 3 yrs because a 1 yr lease is not worth the price increase in your monthly payment.
- You have a set amount of miles you can drive during the life of the lease.
- You pay for oil changes, routine maintenance, etc.
- Total cost for the car would be a lot less by purchasing it via finance/cash vs leasing then buying out. You also spend more time with the dealer working out the cap cost reduction, out-the-door (commonly referred to as the OTD) price, etc. if you definitely plan on buying it after lease-end.
Option 3:
If you have the budget, credit score, and willingness to splurge, Volvo has a program (Care by Volvo) where you “rent” an S60 or XC40 for about $700/mo.
Pros:
- Tax, reg, maintenance, and insurance are included with the monthly payment.
- No down payment needed.
- Zero time spent looking for the best price from a dealer or insurer.
- You get to switch vehicles in the same price category after 1 yr.
- Only thing you pay for other than the monthly fee is gas and tolls.
- Excess wear, tire protection, and (I think) roadside svc is included.
- The “lowest-tier” vehicles are pretty nicely equipped. It’s also pretty much brand new.
Cons:
- Contract locks you in for two years.
- Cost is a few hundred more than your proposed budget.
- Might not qualify if your Auto FICO or insurance history doesn’t meet their requirements (which they don’t disclose...but just to give you an idea: my score was in the 600’s, and I had an at-fault accident within the past yr. I still got approved, but they took longer to give me an answer).
- You are limited to 15k mi/yr. IDK about your driving habits, but I’ve had my new(ish) car for over a month and change and have almost 3.2k mi on it already.
- Like a lease, your payments do not go towards the purchase of the car. Unlike a lease, however, you will not have the option to do a buy-out. Don’t fall in love with the car—it’s a temporary fling.
I almost went with #3 before I decided to buy instead. If you can afford it, that’s the one that is most streamlined and headache-free. Nothing to worry about other than paying the monthly fee and doing routine upkeep.

Honestly it might be better to just buy a cheap beater.
