Eric Carle Museum is worth the visit if you are into picture book art - they have two galleries with rotating exhibits. They also have an awesome reading library with regular story times. There is also an art room for kids (they used to have a HUGE felt board - not sure if it still there but my dtr loved it!) They often have special events and book signings - I would try to schedule around one of those because the museum itself doesn't take that long to check out. My fave restaurant in the area is Bueno y Sano - yum! Amherst Brewing Co is pretty good too. For the full geek trifecta, you would need to do the Emily Dickinson Museum and the Yiddish Book Center to complete your trip ;)

It's right down the street from me and I was a member for years when my kids were younger. Downtown amherst has plenty to do and eat. I second the recommendation to get lunch or a snack at Atkins, which is right across from the carle, a couple miles from the downtown area. Other things to do: if you are outdoorsy, the notch visitor center is about a half mile from the carle. There is a natural history museum on the Amherst college campus called the berenski museum (they also have an art gallery- mead art gallery). The Emily Dickinson museum is also in Amherst.
