Looking for a vegan veterinarian for pets in the Hamilton area? Not interested in funding violent habits

I'll ask around at work tonight for Hamilton vets that are vegan. If you don't mind the drive to Burlington you can see Dr. Tina Hall at Headon Forest Animal Hospital. I checked the Toronto Vegan page all the way back to Dec but I think the posts were deleted because this is a debate that can get pretty heated. I know that there were numerous recommendations though so it may be worth posting this on that page too..
I have five dogs. I put them all on a vegan diet and all were good with it except one who took a long time to transition including several trips to the vet. After feeding him vegan for about a year I noticed he had blood in his urine. The poor guy g ot bladder stones and needed surgery and had a pretty heavy recovery. After consulting with a vegan vet, I found out that some breeds of dogs have trouble on a vegan diet due to the PH change in the urine. She said all dogs who are switched to a vegan diet should have their PH checked. Our non-vegan vet did not know this, and I guess most would not if they have no other clients that want to have vegan dogs. Anyway, after going back and forth to the vet to have his PH checked for a year and never being able to balance it, he is now eating urinary food which is not vegan. I share this because if you don't have a vegan vet they may not know to keep an eye on the PH. (you can buy strips from the vet, to test this yourself). I forget the normal PH. Rudigrrr is part poodle and this is one of the breeds that have trouble with being vegan, there are other breeds as well. The vegan vet, Dr. Armaiti May wrote an article on this topic which will give you the information that you will need to be in the know about before you transition your dog/s. Here is the article. http://www.veganhealth.org/articles/vegan_dogs

Salvatore I just mean speak to someone who knows what they are talking about, not read something online and says they've done "research". There are specialists in veterinary nutrition. We even have one in Guelph at OVC. http://www.ovc.uoguelph.ca/.../ClinNutrition---Parr.asp I have never met anyone in the profesional veterinary field that has been convinced that cats should be on a vegan diet, vegans included. I am open to new data of course but only someone with these credientials could convince me.
Discussing this topic further at work tonight. This website is actually pretty good. They seem to give good info and aren't afraid to recognize that sometimes vegan diets are not appropriate like in cases with urinary issues as Laura mentioned above. http://www.vegancats.com/veganfaq.php

Sara it's not a misconception it's their classification. I only trust food that's been around long enough to prove it's not causing health issues or nutritional deficiencies which is at least 20 years. I see the long term effects of unbalanced diets f irst hand all the time. Raw diets, BARF diets, homemade diets and what many people believe are high quality pet store diets included. To each their own but please speak to a non biased qualified feline nutritionist (which is hard to find) before deciding. I know Toronto Vegans has numerous threads regarding this subject. I believe some people mentioned various vegan diets for cats, amidst all the controversy.

Evolution Diet Canada sells vegan food both for dogs and cats and now they deliver in Toronto ( I ordered from the States and cost me a fortune). I feed my cat Ami Food from Timmie Doggie Outfitters, they have two stores in Toronto.

Just stay away from Askey Animal Hospital or any other clinic operated by Dr. Konh-*Gould.* Her incompetent staff (actual vets) have a huge turnover rate. She runs her clinics purely for money. Don't ask me how I know. :(

My current vet *Upper Oakville Pet Hospital* has a 5.0 on Google reviews if that helps.

Also they price match! So if you find cheaper services elsewhere and tell them theylll match the price! Was a policy before they got to their new location but I imagine it’s the same!

Just pick the vet that will put you and your pet first. And then pick a pet insurance company that does the same. It will help you in the long run... I know from my own experience. My pugs are in the best care at the Animal hospital of Oakville on the south service road by Trafalgar and having the insurance doesn’t make me question any costs that they need for vet care

They’re lovely. We’ve used them for years. They helped us reach a difficult decision for our 18-year-old cat. Guided us towards kindly letting her go instead of paying $$$ to maybe give her a few uncomfortable weeks.

Our dogs have been taken care of by Dr. Marj Paterson at McCleary Animal Hospital on Clarkson Road for many years. One of them has serious health issues and we have been fortunate that Marj was able to help keep her alive and healthy for the past four years. http://www.mcclearyanimalhospital.com/ Great staff and a terrific vet.
