Sounds not right to be charged....doesn't it...but I've been doing many estimates now for the last few weeks or so. My husband Vinny (Lamberto Builders) has been a builder for the last 15 years. It really depends on how much damage is done. To figure out how much lumber you need, sheet rock, roofing, kitchen cabinets, fixtures, electrical, A/C, decking and concrete you need for your job (that is, provided you have approved plans from the town) takes a while and a lot of calls to various subtractors. Plus the demolition and clean-up of mold. You don't want to overcharge or undercharge. But it can take him a good day or more to talk to everyone and get their estimates...and then I type them up for him. All his past customers have been calling him to fix their houses back up + some new ones. He hasn't charged for estimates. But, if that was all he did do and didn't get the job(s), well, we'd be out of our home, too, for not being able to pay our mortgage;)
