AUT international house in Auckland. Really professional, dedicated teachers. Embassy English in Australia has links to several universities, and an award-winning (Best Language School in Australia, I think) program, that integrates things like trips to the cinema and other social events. (Full disclosure, I used to work with, but not for, their parent company Study Group.) http://corporate.studygroup.com/language-education/embassy-english If you want a language school with pathways to university courses, they should be ideal, I would think.

Thanks to all for the recommendations. The schools all look really good. Unfortunately, our uni prefers a school that also offers TOEIC (sigh...) courses which seems to limit the market a bit. Dominion and AUT in Auckland look really promising (thanks Ian Box and William Louis Giacon) . Anyone have any experience with Languages International? (also in Auckland) or RELA (Rotorua)

Close to Osaka, i go to Kyoto Institute of Culture and Language (KICL) in Kyoto, its a challenging and intensive course but she could certainly get from beginner to upper-intermediate in one year.
