Soooooo, seeking alternatives to nuking my house to take care of a rat problem. I don't like baiting because of my dogs, so I need to seal the house up- crawl spaces...

Call morgan Bullard pest control he's gotten rats, squirrels, possums and raccoons out of clients houses for me. Want NumbeR?

We used Critter Gitter at our old house, they put traps (that THEY came back to check) in the attic, and a dog proof bait box in the backyard. They also foam sealed all the little cracks and holes where the rats could get in. Did a great job and solved the problem. http://lewiscrittergitter.com

My home was built in 1940. It is off grade and was cooled using a whole hoise fan. There is an opening between the sheathing and brick that run around the entire perimeter of the house from floor to ceiling. It was built like that to draw cool air from under the home through the walls and vent it out of the attic. It also is a nice freeway for rats, mice and squirrels to move from under the house to the attic. This is a good article to educate yourself before you speak to a contractor drawn from several college sources that cover a wide variety of solutions.http://icwdm.org/handbook/rodents/RodentExclusion.asp

We sealed everything up (got great tips from Fireman pest control, but did the work ourselves) and also ended up with some feral cats hanging out in the yard and calling this home after they were displaced...no more rats!

The aforementioned Rat Zapper has a light that will blink letting you know when a critter has entered it a tripped the circuit. Highly effective and no dead rat in your walls or attic:)
McCall R. replied:
The Rat Zapper kills them with no poison. 4 C batteries us all it takes:)

You could put out a rat bait box. That's what we did to protect our dogs. https://www.amazon.com/Tomcat-Killer-Resistant-Refillable-Station/dp/B00CQDNBTG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472002428&sr=8-1&keywords=rat+box
