I love deck builders, she loves TTR, maybe this would be a good one to get her into deck builders, Are there any other good deck builders that aren't fantasy themed?
Shadowrun Crossfire is pretty merciless Eminent Domain and Core Worlds are Sci-Fi Deckbuilders.

Paperback. Scrabble as a deck builder, but WAY more fun. Star Realms. Tight, quick combat. 15-20 minutes a game. TONS of fun.

Arctic Scavengers is another great deck builder with a post apoc nuclear winter theme. It has an end of round skirmish for an extra card at the end of each round.

I feel like I need something else to call deck builders. I can't objectively talk about them with friends who are starting to get into games because the term paints the...

I like to call the collectible and LCG games like Magic, Netrunner, and others, Constructed Deck games as you construct your deck before you play. On the other hand in Deck Building Games you are building a deck from a basic deck while you play the game. It's an important difference. One describes a method of setup and the other describes a game mechanic/method of play. I explain it like that when people say "Oh so like Magic?" when talking about Deck Builders.

The term paints the picture of MtG because that is more or less the inspiration for the genre in the first place. Deckbuilders, in general, are not CCGs, though, and as someone else mentioned, the game is played as you build your deck, rather than afterwards. The MtG comparison is not only apt, it gives a great starting point for those who are familiar. For instance, if you started with a few basic lands and a couple low powered creatures and were able to use your lands to buy more powerful creatures during your turn, you'd have something like Star Realms (or Hero Realms).
I am considering designing a deck building game and need to play all the deck builders I can get my hands on as research. I am looking for suggestions! What are your...

Dominion is excellent because of the variable buy row and because all of the cards in that round are available to be bought from everyone at any time, so it feels like it's purely about you building the most efficient deck vs everyone else, without any input from a variable card draw. I also really love Harry Potter because the theme is so strong. I love how as you progress through the years you get better as a wizard and gain access to better spells, as well as finding more items and allies that appeared in the books in those years. I really like the look of Star realms, for the idea of it being a 1 v1 battle.

Legendary Marvel is our favourite deck builder, closely followed by Temp Worker Assassins (which puts a slightly different spin on the basic mechanics). But we also love the combination of worker placement and deck building in Lewis and Clark. Granted, the deck building is slow, and only small part of the game, but the combination of mechanics in that game is why we love it so much.
