Gallo Nero is a restaurant in the Pearl that is quite a hub for Italian ex-pats in Portland. What is their story? How are they here?

They can try My Fathers House in Gresham. 503-492-3046. It's a short term program for families with children. Also Portland Homeless Family Solutions. Temporary shelter for families. Call 211 for info.

Robbin has listed two of the best options we suggest to families. 211 is a great starting place, but if language is a larger barrier, solely showing up at the shelter for Human Solutions will be a great start to connections and resources, including a place to stay in an emergency basis. I don't believe they turn any families away. http://humansolutions.org/services/homeless-services/

The Inn at St. John's is probably the cheapest place on the peninsula. The neighborhood its in can be kinda shady at night (though I think the worst that would happen is you may be approached by a panhandler) but the hotel itself is pretty cute...its a very throwback/euro style place, with like shared bathrooms per floor and old school victorian-looking wallpaper and stuff. And, y'know, cheaper than any other hotel on the peninsula by a *lot.*

Where are you looking for reviews? [TripAdvisor](http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g40827-Portland_Maine-Hotels.html#T_CAT_HOTEL_MOTEL) is usually pretty current. I used to work at a hotel in Portland and I know there are always people updating and posting reviews.

I second the Inn at St. John's; unfortunately this is the high season for Portland. I used to work at a very nice hotel downtown, and every establishment in the Old Port raises their rates significantly this time of year. Here is another suggestion, check out the rates of hotels in South Portland. I believe that most of these places have complimentary transportation to and from the hotel; so you could get your drink on w/o having to worry about catching a cab. If you're going to shell out the big $ for a room in the Old Port, I'd rather be on the beach. Old Orchard Beach, not far from Portland, and there's a great night life there, too.

Try the holiday inn by the civic center I stay there all the time when I "enjoy" the old port too much

If your feeling up for it there are a few rent-a-cabin places around the portland area that can be real cheap, like 200 a week

My husband and I stayed at the travelodge in westbrook not long ago and it was super cheap! Like 50$ for the night! It was a bit sketchy at first, but when I woke up with a sore through at 3:30 am I went down to the desk to buy some medicine, the lady told me they didn't have any but she made me a little cup of tea with honey and lemon, they where just super nice!
Not strictly hiking related, but I need advice: I'm planning a trip to kayak the San Juan islands, in hopes of an Orca sighting. We've been kayaking before but I'd...
