I've been going to A Better Men's Barber Shop. It's in Cary, near the Bass Pro Shop. $25 for a cut. free beer. Nice guys. wet-shave razor cuts instead of just pulling out the hedge trimmer at the end of the cut. They always do a great job and are very friendly. It's exactly what I'd expect from an old fashioned barber shop.

You don't say where in Raleigh you are, but if you are in S. Raleigh near Fuquay, I have been very happy with Pro Barbers Barber Shop.

Esquire: 919-821-4259 Ask for Ronnie or Beth. I've been going there for 40 years! Was there today. 2414 Wycliff Rd., Ste 109, Raleigh, NC This is near Lake Boone Trail Shopping center.

I go to Dennis Best Men's Salon in Durham. Don't let the name fool you, this is a barber shop and not a salon. They'll do you right. It's been my experience that a lot of people around here have a tendency to recommend hair salons with a barbershop vibe (Arrow, Pedro Williams, Rock's, etc) rather than an actual barbershop. Now I'm not saying those places will give you a bad cut, but if you're looking for that small barbershop experience then they aren't it. So be weary of that.

Barber Shop/Salon:
There are a number of transmen and women who have their barber/beauty licenses, and I think we'd benefit from starting franchises...
Mitch S. replied:
Natalie Avery Smyth: I was thinking exactly that, but I want the chain owned and operated by transfolk. The idea is to get people back to work. But the shop itself would be open to everyone. There used to be a place called Astor Haircutters in NY in the 80's. They did A LOT of business, in the heart of Greenwich Village. And they had gay and lesbian and I suspect transfolk as hair cutters/stylists, so I suspect we'd be able to do the same kind of thing, but the trick (other than getting financial backing) is to find a...hook. http://www.astorplacehairnyc.com/

Man-Mur is where I went the entire time I was at NCSU. It was then (and I'm assuming still is) an old-school barber shop. http://man-murbarbershop.com/

Antonio at pro barber mobile studios (terrible name I know). It’s in North Raleigh though so not sure if it’s worth the drive to you. I’m white and he’s been cutting my hair for about 6 years and always kills it. From fades to longer cuts he is really good at straight hair as well as curly hair. I wouldn’t really trust arrow; environment is cool but I’ve seen a lot of their cuts in person and they really are not great for the prices they’re charging. More of a hipster gathering place than anything.

I was a white guy going to black barbers in Brooklyn for years. It was never a problem. Just go to the black barbershop.
Looking for a great barbershop that also trims beards. So, finally after 20 years I'm growing a beard. But after two'ish months the bushwhack on my face is getting out...

"A Better Man's Barber Shop" in Cary across from Bass Pro is awesome. The main guy there, Scott is awesome at cuts and beards.
AquaSlothNC replied:
Arrow in Cameron Village. Ask for Steve. Don't let anyone else do it. As long as he's cutting hair and trimming beards I'll only go to him. He trimmed mine for my wedding.

Glenwood South Barberstudio. William does a great job, he is the only barber in there. He also teaches barbershop classes. May have to book a week or 2 out for primetime slots (after work).

I know you're looking for a good barber, but as far as your beard get a trimmer and work on 'guarding it down.' I use a trimmer to guard down the main parts of my beard and then use a razor and shaving cream for underneath my neck and scrape some off the cheek as well. You end up looking clean all while having your beard controlled, lol.

In Japan, my daughter gets her hair done in Shibuya at one of our friends salons, when her mother can't do it. Aki took it upon herself to learn how to do our daughter's hair because bi-racial hair, especially Asian and African American hair, is kinda difficult to maintain. When you find a good barber, STAY WITH THEM! lol
