Have her go to the field office and apply. Having an attorney does not speed up the process or give her a better chance at being approved. The people at the field office can help her fill out the paperwork. Source: Spouse is a SSD Adjudicator

My mother went through a similar situation and became totally disabled a couple years ago. She didn't get any movement with SSI for a year by applying. After retaining an attorney / law firm approximately a year later she was able to get declared totally disabled by SSI. She's entitled to the two years of back payments. I am not going to name the firm here because while they had a successful outcome, she had some concerns. Social security is backlogged with an unprecedented number of cases, I highly suggest getting legal representation.
