If you are looking for realism, Hands down Alexis Vaatate at Vatican Studios in Lake Forest. I have over 100 hrs of ink by various artists. He was apprenticed under Franco V and is amazing . This is a free hand piece he is working on for me.

Another artist my husband and I like is Vance ORourke with Dusk2Dawn tattoo. These pics are all his work. The bottom Isis was actually a coverup of my 1 st tattoo when i was 18 and stupid- a horrible tramp stamp hahaha. Vance kills it on color, cover ups, comics, traditional and hard line design work. He is in Stanton but well worth the drive and reasonable. Finding the right artist for what you want is imperative. Do not skimp on price or go because they are located close. Do your research after you get your recommendations.
