I have had good luck with Shearer Realty. They listed the unit, showed it, screened 6 applications and handled all the approvals. So far, so good. http://rentalhousesincharlotte.com/

There are a lot of houses in neighborhoods like The Fan that are split into multiple apartments that have shared yards, if you want a smaller place. Several of the older suburbs, that are still really close to the city and more walkable/bikeable than stereotypical suburbs, have houses for rent. I'm not sure the best way to look, but Zillow does whole house rentals and you might get lucky with something small. I've seen a lot of property owners directly renting out houses on a Facebook group called Lindsey's List (not to be confused with the similar but less used Lindsey's List RVA). Might depend on what your reason for wanting a yard is as to what the best option might be, like is it for dogs, for gardening, for sweet beer soaked BBQs, etc.

Check out the apartments west of Malvern and south of Monument. Decent amount of homes converted into two or three apartments and most seem to have backyards.

Lakeside is an older suburb with a nice variety of housing stock including small houses that are often available for rent. As another poster mentioned, Zillow is always a good resource. There are a lot of good options, both in the city and in older suburbs. And - welcome to RVA!!

Lots of them out there. Usually private landlords. Look on Zillow and Apartments.com You're big issue is going to be trying to rent from out of town without in person visit. That's a classic scam fact pattern, so a lot of people won't rent to you.
