What a joke. The installer probably gets commission, and sadly every once in a while someone will pay those outrageous prices. Of course with out seeing the job it's hard to give you a solid price, but 1200 bucks with a permit is fair for a straight swap. If it requires plumbing or exhaust piping and a stand to bring it up to code then 1800 isn't crazy. If I weren't busy I'd love to help. Give my buddy a call. I called All Star for a repair of a leak under the house a month ago. They came out that day, didn't go under the house (they were in very clean uniforms), diagnosed the problem by talking to us and looking through a vent. Left, promising to email an estimate. Never heard from them. I called Alpha Plumbing in Hayward. 795-6699. They came the next morning, crawled under my house, gave an estimate and made the repair the same day! I would call them again!

(FYI, in Oakland, Alameda, Richmond, practically EVERY home that sells has to get a new sewer line due to a federal law protecting the bay = these guys are experts, and that's who real estate brokers use routinely = based on their pricing!).
