If you're going to NYC in December, I'd make a point of going past Rockefeller Center in the early evening. MOMA isn't too far away, nor are the theaters. Dining is endless. Use Yelp or ask locals where to eat. You can get great ethnic food for a good price if you do the research. If you do any street food, go to the one with the longest line. People know.

My aunt has a place on the waterfront in Morro Bay for $150/night. Sleeps 4 in beds, up to 8 if you bring a couple air mattresses. My pops and I gutted and remodeled it about 20 yrs ago.
