Have any of you heard of "functional medicine", or even better seen a functional medicine doctor? I have just found one, but he is over an hour away, wondering if it...
Rich B. replied:
Definition from The Institute of Functional Medicine: Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21 st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, Functional Medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional Medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, Functional Medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual. My own definition: Mainstream medicine focuses on research approved by the FDA. Sadly, the ultra high cost of FDA oversight means that only pharmaceuticals with huge sales potential go through the approval process. This leaves out thousands of non-traditional treatments that may (or may not) be better than a pharmaceutical solution. Functional Medicine embraces all forms of treatment and prevention including the pharmaceutical approach but making sure to include diet, herbs, essential oils, and various lifestyle factors. The Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) is the clearinghouse for this knowledge and Dr. Mark Hyman is their most prolific and visible spokesperson. Dr. Hyman has many videos on YouTube and I urge you to watch as many as you can to understand the IFM approach to health and wellness. Lisa Kathryn Brown Geiger You asked if it would be worth it to drive to an IFM practitioner. My opinion is a definite YES. See this link. https://www.functionalmedicine.org/

And still walking. Also gluten free and vegan. Diet is crucial. Check the Mayo Clinics recommendations for various ailments. Because of gastritis, I take KAL chewables and dissolve under my tongue.
Lisa G. replied:
Rich Blumenthal - do those costs seem appropriate to you? I can't afford it anyway, but I kind of started seeing red flags with this. Especially since he didn't give me any costs voluntarily. It was after I asked. And first he said the $500. Then I ask ed about any extra costs for tests, office visits etc and he said the $300, then I asked about office visits again and he said the $99. Kind of set off my 'sketchy' alarm.
Rich B. replied:
Lisa Kathryn Brown Geiger The costs are not enormously out of line but a far more cost effective approach is to go to the Life Extension Foundation website and order a 25(OH)D blood test through them. The cost is about $63 for non-members and there i s no doctor visit necessary, therefore no charge for an office visit. If there is no Lab Corp near you, go instead to the Vitamin D Council website and order a home test through them. You do it yourself at home and the test is done entirely by mail. You can easily announce your results here for advice whether to increase your dosage. Hint: If under 50 ng/mL, increase your dosage. If over 100 ng/mL, decrease your dosage. See the link. http://www.lef.org/Vitam.../Blood-Tests/Nutrient-Testing.htm

I don't like Cole Family Practice, especially the way the treat self-pay patients. All about money and she, the NP, won't even call back to discuss anything and makes you go in for another appointment at $95 a hit. I'm going to try Dr. Roz Lewis. Does anyone know if she is open-minded about alternative medicine?
