Ed Little in Culver City is really great and I can't recommend him highly enough. Nor can most yelp [reviewers](http://www.yelp.com/biz/ed-little-auto-service-culver-city) It's a great shop, but it there's a waiting list for an appointment, usually about a week or two.

My roommate has an old as hell Chevy Cavalier that needs constant care, and she highly recommends Piechowski on Overland, in the Palms area. He gets pretty good ratings on [yelp](http://www.yelp.com/biz/piechowski-john-automotive-los-angeles), and she can't recommend him hard enough.

The guys at Hyperion Auto in Silverlake / Los Feliz have always treated me fairly, inexpensively, and done great work. When you drive a 1993 Nissan, you learn really quickly who is trying to screw you on unnecessary repairs and who will shoot you straight and get you running. 323-667-3180. Hyperion about a mile past Sunset.

A bit away from you, but my family has used J&D Auto in Manhattan Beach for 30+ years. Recently, a bad relay in my mom's Taurus sometimes kept it from starting. They spent about 20 minutes nailing it down and charged her something like $18 (yes, eighteen dollars) for a new one.

If you live in Santa Monica you could try Fix Car Now, which is in Culver City. I get my oil changed there. The price is good and they never upsell me on anything. They have strong reviews on yelp as well. I'd link it but I'm not that invested in this.

I went to Jim Madsen on Pico near Crenshaw about a year ago and he was great. I also had a Ford (a very old one) and he told me he could make $2 k worth of repairs but it might break down in another 6 months. He could have easily made the repairs and charged me $2 k and I wouldn't have known the difference. That kind of honesty is why he's always my mechanic!

Al's Auto on Burbank Blvd. across from the Electronics City. He's great and honest. Won't do it if you don't need it. Same applies to Western Tire (and brakes, suspension, etc.) on Victory. edit: Oh. Santa Monica. Never mind.

I've used them for years, they do great work without pushing repairs. My own anecdote, I had a car with a broken motor mount. A M wouldn't do the repair because the car was too old and in ragged shaped. I am not a car person, so for me it was good advice. They are on Big Bend in Webster Groves (close to dog town). If your familiar they are right by the dairy queen where Laclede Station crosses big bend.

I don't have a recommendation, but look for an independent mazda specialist that's been around a while. independents that specialize either go out of business quick or are very good at what they do. but, it's not uncommon that replacement is cheaper than a rebuild or repair. it sounds like it could be the synchronizer has some issue, and that often means there's a lot more just waiting to cause problem. but I'm no mazda expert, so...

"Civilization IV: Colonization" In this one, within a city you can drag&drop pops to change resource production. If you keep one in the same spot, eventually it will evolve into a specialist (i.e. more efficient). Moreover, you can have pops get out of the city and become "civilian units" (so you can have them work tiles, build roads or change city) or "military units", if you have guns to equip them with. Well worth a look, I haven't seen anything so deep in this regard.
Sanorpas replied:
Pandora:First Contact has it. Tho I'm recommending it for a different reason, this one has randomized tech tree, it's very basic, but a very interesting idea that I can't recall being done much, if at all(Edit:Stellaris comes to mind). Tech tree visibility options also offer interesting twists here.

Not to be blunt, but dragging workers between tasks is a kind of tired mechanic at this point. Its been done to death. Come up with something different and original.
Ilitarist replied:
Endless Space has it too and there it's more pronounced cause each population unit is different. So you shuffle them between planets and systems. I think it's the best implementation of the system. Same with Master of Orion Conquer the Stars - there they're even animated.

xGnoSiSx replied:
The system of draging pop units across activities has been done to death. You need a new idea that solves the problems: 1. it has no scale - you can't deal with pops as icons in high populated planets - it gets messy. 2. it treats population as a generic and abstract number. Look at stelaris which has races, ethics and factions. 3. The flexibility of converting sientists to engineers/workers etc on the fly is very game braking and unimaginatve. pops should be specialized - you can't turn a planet full of scientists to miners in 1 turn/month/year. 4. We need victoria 2 in space.
therealcrow999 replied:
Civ 5 and Civ 6 have it, you usually have to dig for it. Civ mechanic is more click to have someone there or remove them. Endless Space 1, I think has it. I can't remember if Endless Space 2 has it. I think if the Endless Space has them, its no a drag and drop, more of a click on blank slot to add in a population. The new Master of Orion has it, and it seems to stand out more. The way they present it to the player, it's a main mechanic to the game. Even though its a Entry level 4X game and does things simple, the drag population is there. http://store.steampowered.com/app/298050/Master_of_Orion/

Stellaris uses such a system for planetary resources.

This will have been 10-15 years ago at least so my memory may be hazy but I'm like 95% sure Sid Meier's alpha centauri had something like what you mention, same with CivNet. As such it might be worth taking a look at the more modern civilization games too.
It was less you dragging pop icons about and more selecting tiles on which they would work for your food/mineral/tech bonus etc. Then in the city screen you'd have the option to swap a farmer/villager to something like a scientist/tax collector etc.
By the way if you are attempting/creating a game like this give the player some more feedback... Seeing a +1 mineral icon is... well, it's informative enough I wouldn't mind in something like distant worlds, but it's no fun, why not have the worker visibly pounding an anvil in his steel mill, ploughing the farm or zapping things in his sci-fi laboratory.
As to your last point, it may not be population but if you're looking for animation to go alongside this kind of thing I'd suggest taking some inspiration from Princess Maker II. The 2D images are really dated by now but the animations are still crazy immersive.
Flarelocke replied:
Thea: the Awakening uses this mechanic. All of the Civ games + Alpha Centauri let you pick which tiles you want to exploit. Colonization did it best, though.
