has anyone figured out an alternative to the evil empire comcast? i freaking HATE them!
prefer to still have phone service still but could relinquish it, internet needs...
Frank S. replied:
There is no alternative. It is a monopoly. Call the city council and ask them to bring Google fiber to the city (what Portland did). Open up Internet connectivity to competition. http://crosscut.com/.../google-fiber-never-come-seattle.../
Kimberly E. replied:
Jonathan Lawson --Wave's site says that i am in their area, but i haven't tried to contact them yet.
Jonathan L. replied:
Sorry, meant 8 mb not gb!:) Also, Wave will never stretch a bit south--their service areas are determined by franchise agreements with the city. Frank Strobel is right that the real answer is fiber--a municipal system as the city has studied for years, or a viable partnership like Google fiber. That's if Mayor Murray chooses to put his money where his mouth is.
Jonathan L. replied:
Here's the city's cable franchise map: http://www.seattle.gov/.../Cable_Franchise_Map2013.pdf You're either in district I or III, both of which are Comcast only unless this map is out of date.
David E. replied:
Clink + Direct TV is a poor substitute for Xfinity bundle of Cable, high speed wireless and security. We tried hard to make it work out if principle, but Clink ain't no paragon of corporate virtue either IMHO.
Tiffany L. replied:
RIP Gigabit
Jonathan L. replied:
Those of us in Comcast land are not in Wave land--mutually exclusive. CenturyLink DSL is the option. I have their 8 gb service and can get that speed pretty reliably, no complaints. I wouldn't assume that' 8 gb is too slow for streaming movies without someone sharing their experience? (I haven't tried Netflix here). Also, Comcast is SO the evil empire.

Zito - Mike Scott can help at Friday Harbor Cable Guy on FB
Mark M. replied:
Cable is only available in town. Mount Dallas you need to talk to Rock Island, there are several groups developing plans for building out the necessary infrastructure for better service. Mike Greene and Gerry Lawlor can outline the options and put you in touch with the folks who are organizing things for your exact location.
Gerry L. replied:
Louise, call RI at 360-378-5884 and we can look at various options for you both in the short term and long term.

Wow. Thank you all for sharing. This has been really helpful and has given us some concrete examples. Chris Harwood. We might take you up on your offer. Leaving Florida in February and should cross border via Detroit mid to late April.
Karsten A. replied:
Until such time as the US & Canadian phone and banking systems are comparable Brian Barker has nailed it in terms of having the best of both "worlds". I am fortunate enough to have a US address near the border that I can use for all my US banking and phone needs. I have the US ATT phone, US Verizon Jetpack, US bank account and US Visa and MasterCard. Makes travelling in the US so much easier.
Gary H. replied:
Verizon Wireless has a Can/Mex plan for voice - Adds $15/mo to your "More Every" basic plan for 1000 min/mo. Doesn't do any good for data, however.
Chris H. replied:
Another thought - along with Google voice there's Skype. I know of some folks who have used MagicJack (www.magicjack.com/Holiday-Special) when going from Canada to the US. That however maybe bandwidth dependent.
Who's got a phone service they love? I've gotta go yell at T-Mobile tomorrow because Joe and I were left high and dry w/ no phone service in Rome when we needed to call...
Justin P. replied:
Not your favorite, but T-Mobile prepaid, $30 a month. Unlimited data, unlimited text, 100 minutes. No contract. Been on it a year and don't really have complaints. Down by the bottom of the page on the left side http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-plans
