Many of the schools offer free demo lessons but they can be quite annoying afterwards by hounding you to sign up immediately, just remember to go away and have a think about it a bit afterwards before you commit. They have set prices but TIC, you can bargain them down a bit.

I would recommend JingJing at Mandarin campus. http://mandarincampus.com/ A mutual friend taking her Phd in the states needed to learn some insane amount of specialized characters (i.e. ones before traditional and simplified) and JJ was essential to her success. I think the campus is slow right now because of the weather. Best of luck!
