Long time self-employed math tutor here.
1. What kind of math does he want to tutor? Remedial? Test prep? Enrichment? Young kids? High school? University?
2. What makes you think he would be good at math tutoring? Reaching most people in math is *nothing* like being good at math. It's quite common - probably the norm - for people who like math to go into math education then be utterly *shell shocked* at the knowledge gaps and math phobia they encounter within a few months of teaching/tutoring.
3. If he wants to get started, I'd actually suggest volunteering first. Many places, such as alternative and adult education centers, have few math experts and would greatly appreciate his help. This can be a real eye-opener.
4. If he's doing this mainly for money, he could consider doing high-level test prep, i.e. the kind of math you need to get into medical schools, grad schools, etc., and doing that with maybe 3-4 students at a time. Look around to see what other people and companies charge for this - prices can be pretty crazy.

I tutor by finding clients using FB Marketplace-esque websites and its lucrative side hustle. I'd be curious what other interesting ideas are out there!

I’d say either something like tutoring or being a tax guy/ book keeper on the side is the safest, most reliable option. If he’s more adventurous, and willing to take some risk, I’d say professional gambling, especially spots betting or blackjack

He could start his own math tutoring company! If he got a DBA for $25 he's got himself a name and business. [Thumbtack.com](https://Thumbtack.com) is pretty good for advertising, but they did just get acquired by HomeAdvisors and I've noticed the quality go down :,( Facebook Ads are also a good way to get the word out, I've heard.
ISO math tutor for my 2-grader 2-4 days a week 1 hour sessions paying $25 an hour
