This is my favourate Ryokan.. very reasonable prices, traditional wooden build with Japanese style tatami rooms in arguably the most significant cultural area of Tokyo (Asakusa). http://www.libertyhouse.gr.jp/ The guy that runs it speaks very good English and is helpful. This part of town is not party central like Shinjuku or Shibuya though, but it's a must see.

Try websites like hostelworld.com as you can get cheap traditional accommodation as well as hostels. Asakusa is lovely but I recommend staying near the Yamanote line stations if it's your first time in Tokyo as it's far easier to get around and see the city. Many of them like Shibuya, Akihabara and Harajuku are already must-go destinations
