The Minami-senju area has tons of cheap hostels. Including this one (my favorite) The New Koyo hotel http://www.booking.com/hotel/jp/new-koyo.en.html?aid=330632;label=msn-yPILqRMRSRRVmWFP1JO6XQ There is a great community in this area with lots of travelers, and my favorite bar "Cafe Tepui"

Also near Asakusa I have stayed at [this hostel](http://www.khaosan-tokyo.com/en/ninja/) which was very clean and had a kitchen and fridge that guests could use. It was a good price and very convenient. The bunks are also enclosed in wooden boxes (poor man's capsule hotel?) that you could lock your case in during the day.

Friends who've been to, lived in, and/or are living Tokyo - could you please recommend some decently priced accommodation, potentially around Shinjuku?
Thank you!

Good Tokyo hostels with smaller dorms (six beds or less)? I'm going to Tokyo in March so I still have lots of time and many places won't allow me to book yet but I'd...

'Eyyyyyy. Lone traveler going to Japan in March, too! :D I keep going back and forth between risking an AirBNB, or going for a hostel. Have you checked out [HostelWorld](http://www.hostelworld.com)? If you hit the "Filter" button after searching for Tokyo, then click "Room", you'll get a list of options for room types/sizes (double, single, men-only, women-only, etc.). I'm not seeing anything specifically for 6 vs 8, but hopefully it can still help you narrow things down.
amyranthlovely replied:
Most hostels that I've stayed in have 6 beds, some even only had 4. K's house in Kyoto is prime example of that. If it bothers you that much, why not just pony up for the single room? The downside being you're traveling during peak season, prices will be increased regardless and if you can't afford a single, you may have to take the 8 person room just so you can complete your trip. You may not have the choice in the end as things book up quickly and solidly in cherry blossom season, especially with locals travelling as well.

Ryokogu Anne hostel Yokozuna is a great price hostel with smaller dorms available.

I have stayed in several K's house hostels across Japan and enjoyed them all and would vouch for that. I have also done a lot of airbnb's and have never been cancelled on or had a 'bad' host (some were better than others but i could not say i had a negative experience with any of them). Like the other comments said hostelworld is good for browsing if you're struggling.
Can anyone recommend a hostel in Tokyo? Hi all! I will be traveling to Tokyo from 29 September to 06 October. I've been looking at hostels, however I can't seem to...

We found it easier to just find somewhere close to a main subway station, finding something within a few stops makes it much easier and only adds ten minutes travel to your day

[Sakura Hotel and Hostels](http://www.sakura-hotel.co.jp/) Try this :)
RealArc replied:
There are basically no hostels around these areas. Abundance of hostels are found around Asakusa and Ueno, the outer areas of Tokyo. That said, there is the Ace iin within Shinjuku ward... so you can walk to your hostel if you miss the last train. Or the taxi fare will be pretty cheap. Other than that, maybe try your luck with airbnb. And I would advise against Roppongi.

You might want to look into business hotels or capsule hotels if you are looking for something in that exact location. Personally, I like to stay in a hostel called [NUI!](http://backpackersjapan.co.jp/nui/), in Asakusa area. It is about 10 min walk to two different train lines and the area is definitely quieter than Shibuya.

I stayed in Ann Hostel Yokozuna, Ryogoku. Its about 4 or 5 stops from central Tokyo and near Ueno and Asakusa, which have food/nightlife enough to keep you occupied when not headed into central Tokyo. The hostel was clean, friendly and comfortable and I can't recommend it enough.
Ullo. Can any recommend some budget accommodation in or around Shinjuku? There don't seems to be many choices for hostels/capsules on the regular booking sites but I...
Mohd A. replied:
Go to HostelWorld.com. Shinjuku doesn't have much hostels, try Asakusa or Ikebukuro.
