I worked at Pantry Pride for the 2 or 3 months prior to the closing...we had alot of fun the last month, sitting on top in the attic, drinking and then going down on the floor to work...lol. Wow, that was a long time ago, like 1979/80's?

I worked at Hills Supermarket from Dec. 1968 thru Nov. 1969. It was part of Pueblo Industries, Brentwood, L.I. ~ Emory Moody was the manager then. I was a cashier (often on the beloved express lane) I was also a part/time bookkeeper and worked the courtesy desk. I remember a woman marching up to the desk with a covered roasting pan clutched in her hands. It was at Easter-time. She wanted me to 'smell' the turkey. I declined, said I believed her, and sent her directly to the meat dept.

My first "real job" with working papers@14 was at the Holiday Inn Motel at the Nanuet limits near Spring Valley. I worked in the laundry room in a HOT summer folding clean sheets & towels.Still fold my towels in that fancy manner. Before [and during] that, I had a babysitting empire. Made Lots of money babysitting. Used to buy my own expensive clothes in addition to giving most of it over to the family.

It was called Korvettes until Hills bought it and then it was called Hills. They also had Korvettes furniture where Home goods is now along with a shoe store.

Best Italian grocery store? I’m looking for the best Italian grocery store to get a birthday present— either non-perishable goods or a gift certificate. I’m aware...

We are in Texas. Sadly the kind back in the north east don’t exist here. Although if they build one of those mega Italian stores the one created by Mario Batalli I’d drive anywhere for it. The one in Boston is amazing

I believe Mandola's has a small selection. I don't think you will find anything that meets the standard of "best"

What types of things are you looking for? Honestly, shipping something from New Orleans might be your best bet. You can get great Italian desserts from Angelo Brocato, and they ship. Central Grocery will ship their olive salad. I'm sure there are more places that ship as well, but those are the two that I've ordered from.

Gee, I remember when everything wasn't a big box store. In my home town many moons ago, there weren't that many Italians, but there were a lot of small Italian-owned grocery stores. Just Italian owners, not focused on Italian items. They eventually faded away, replaced by big box grocery stores and 7-11 clones.
There's a pretty authentic eye-talian restaurant over off Burnet near 183. I'd try there.

World Market isn't specifically Italian, but they have a few places around town and might carry the niche products you're looking for: https://stores.worldmarket.com/search.html?q=78701
Dis_Miss replied:
You're over thinking this. Austin doesn't have the type of Italian neighborhoods like you see in older, large cities. You may be better off buying the non-perishables online or getting a gift cert for Mandola's so they can choose to use it on a meal, in the market, or on gelato.
Strong_Coffee replied:
There aren't any good ones, unfortunately.

Central Market is probably your best bet

Mandola's! I really wish there were more Italian groceries here though... I lived in new england a long time ago and we had a great selection of places to go buy fresh pasta.
