For me, I have 2 for my business site. Since my name is 210 Consulting, I bought 210 consulting.com & twotenconsulting.com I figured some might type the numbers while others could type out the words. The twoten redirects over to 210. More than ample for me. Like Eric & some others say, the having hundreds of domains really doesn't do much for your SEO. The only thing it does is keeps competition from buying them. Personally, I could care less what domains the competition buys, I'd rather focus my efforts on continually creating AWESOME, unique content for my site. If I do that they can have just about any domain they want & I will continually outrank them if I keep writing more content than them. I'm a firm believer in making my business better than the others instead of focusing on ways to keep my competitors from doing well. Give good content, share openly and your site will do well. It takes me back to a white paper I read called Authority Rules over at http://authorityrules.com/ Be an authority on whatever subject by giving more than anyone else & you will do just fine in business.

Jimmy, I just checked out the stats on Alexa.com. It's not as good as some of the paid services, but it gives a great snapshot. The third party providers such as Zillow, Realtor.com, and Trulia, are kicking the brokerages in terms of traffic rank and visitors. You can also check the NAR profile of buyers and sellers. They have some good stats on usage. Consumers apparently hit a wide variety of sites rather than focusing on a single one. Surprisingly, brokerage sites and individual agent sites often due better in a specific market area than the big players. Bottom line, as Jeremy says, awesome content rules.

Eric S. replied:
For real estate, if you don't already have an established domain, you would want something that someone would type in for example NewportBeachRealEstate.com if the name of your city is used in lots of other states then you would probably want the state for sure, like SpringfieldMORealEstate.com If the city name you want isn't exactly available you can go for the state name but see if you can come up with a wording that adds it at the very begining or the end of the domain.
Eric S. replied:
The problem is domains that do not have any original content on them do absolutely nothing for you in Google rankings. I see people with 100 s of domains all pointing to various places on the website, and while that's great to make it easy for someone to get to the search for homes in 92663, I just like making sure people know that will not help their Google rankings at all. I can definitely concur that LOTS of people search by street name too for specific properties, but again if you want to really market a city I would make the primary domain for my site the city name and homesinthatcity.com or citynamerealestate.com

Jay Thompson Been there, done that. Here's mine. http://www.agentknowhow.com/2011/04/26/how-to-select-a-domain-name-8-tips-for-real-estate-agents/ I do have a question for the members. Is it worth registering domian names and redirecting it to your primary site?
Kenny C. replied:
If domain names really mattered Search.com and Video.com would be household names. I have written more than one post about domain names. What does that make me? Oh, I know. Nothing. But, Matt Cutts has said a lot about domain names. Google.com? Yahoo.com? Vimeo.com? Provide better content than your competitor, a better user experience than your competitor and better service than your competitor and you can call your domain name http://worstdomainameever.com/ and outperform everyone in your market. It may take longer to get started but there is a point where domain names mean squat.
Jay T. replied:
"Is it worth registering domian names and redirecting it to your primary site?" For what purpose? It does nothing for SEO. It is a good thing to do for common misspellings (I have domains the have Pheonix instead of the correct Phoenix for example). It's nice to have shorter/branded URLs (http://www.PhxREguy.com/ corresponds to my Twitter ID and forwards to my blog).
