I believe Dave Roush is a certified equine dentist, he's on facebook and in this group.
Roni M. replied:
Dr Witt does work on mini's, has mini floats and is in Lake County just about every Friday. Call for more info 485-0156.
Vikki H. replied:
Call Dr. Smith at Middletown Vet Hospital He and his Associates do Dental extractions and cleanings with great care and respect. They handled my Renn with care and experience. Not bad in cost and will work with you Really severe problems I would take to Davis or Palo Alto Equine Dental Clinic. Renn had two root canals because of his age 30 yrs. Total bill was 500.00 for me it would have been 1500 for
Valarie S. replied:
Dr. Waddington does not do teeth. Stewart Kerr does do minis but he is not a veterinarian. I have used Stewart and he did a great job on my mini but I don't know if I would pay $150. Dave Rousch is an equine dentist as well, but again not a veterinarian. It is not legal for a non veterinarian to administer the sedation (to any horse other than their own ) that is required for the teeth to be worked on. I think I would try Dr. Witt.
Juliana V. replied:
Stewart Kerr has a veterinarian who accompanies him and administers the sedatives, monitors the horse, etc.. I have had Stewart do my horse's teeth twice now and I think he does a fine job. I definitely recommend him.
Vikki H. replied:
Man Reading this group of comments sounds like a bunch for HENS gossiping. I am sorry Dr. Smith and his associates are very experienced and competant. I have used Vets from Santa Crruz, Carmel and the Bay Area which Dr. Smith is very comparable. When you a pair of elder horses you need compasion and experience when a decision was made on health of the pair .
Rhonda S. replied:
Dr. Kerr
Margaret K. replied:
Thank you Vikki High! Yes I do work at MAH, but Dr.Smith has always worked on my horses. I was a client before and employee. First of all Stewart Kerr is not a vet for those of you calling him "Dr." Second of all the vet who travels with him is no longer licensed in the state if CA. And yes it is very illegal to have a non veterinarian sedate any animal. Also Stewart Kerr has been in trouble with the cops for sedating animals and no it wasn't Dr.Smith who "tattled on him cause he was jealous". If you want the best Dr.Smith and his associates are who you want!
Heather S. replied:
I have never used Stewart, but I hear great things about him, I have never heard one negative thing about him and may end up using him. But, personally, right now, I am sticking with Dr Lisa Takesue when doing anything that requires drug administration. Being a vet tech for many years, I know what can happen when administering IV sedation via jugular. One slip can hit the carotid artery and then you have huge problems if the person who is doing the administering doesn't know the proper reversal drug and what to do in such an emergency. Let alone, a huge horse seizing or flipping over backwards has danger all in itself...... I have no idea if Stewart knows what to do in this instance, or if he has ever hit a carotid, but I will ask him when I finally meet him and then make a decision then whether or not I will use him. Until then, I will use a vet to do my floats. Dr Takesue is one of the best vets in this county. I've worked side by side with her and she is really the only vet I trust 100% to work on my animals. I have heard excellent things about Dr Smith and his equine dentistry skills too!! Dr Waddington doesn't do floats? since when?
Valarie S. replied:
Heather Sentz, I think I may have mis-spoken. I thought that Dr. Waddinton told me that she didn't do horse teeth, but then I just remembered that she donated a horse, dog or cat teeth certificate to the Lake County Horse Council more than a year ago. I like Dr. Waddinton and have used her several times, so it was not mean't to be derogotory in the least. My suggestion is that you contact her directly.
Heather S. replied:
I've worked with Dr Waddington that is why I was confused lol. Fortunately I have a trusted vet---Lisa---and don't have to shop around.:)
Carol B. replied:
Dr Whitt, Redwood Valley Equine is in Lake Co. once a week. and Dr Jere Waddington, Clearlake does Equine Dentistry.

I'm looking for a good equine dentist who makes ranch calls. We have several horses here who will need their teeth floated this spring. Can you recommend anyone ? Thanks!
Dr Witt does them and is cheaper than Kerr and he's a vet were Kerr isn't and can't do sedation unless he has vet with him.
Carol L. replied:
Dr. Witt just did a couple of my minis and did a great job and was really good with them. He also has a power float for big horses if needed. He will be coming out next month to power float one of my big guys. He was very reasonable.
Carleene C. replied:
Juliana, Check with Angie Herman as there was an equine dentist last year who did a clinic and Angie was really happy with him. Carleene
Carol L. replied:
I personally will stay with Dr. Witt. He spent allot of time with me and talked about some other vet things and taught me some things I didn't know and I've had horses for 40 years. There's always room to learn. He only does horses - not every animal on the farm. He's very knowledgeable.
Heather S. replied:
I've never met Dr Witt but I've heard great things about him. I have met stuart and he's amazing and much more knowledgeable than any vet I've ever worked around. Jodi, everyone has the right to their own opinion.....Stuart is licensed, so I'm not sure why you keep saying he isn't.
Leia G. replied:
Thank you for the interesting discussion on the two individuals I've heard recommended. Can anyone tell me, do both these gentlemen take the time to slide the jaw back and forth to ensure everything moves without resistance after floating, have mini tools, and watch for TMJ problems? I've had good experience with DVM dental specialists in my old home town but the last regular vet I used cranked their mouths open too far, took off too much tooth and never even checked her work and the one horse hasn't chewed right since so now I'm wary.
Marta W. replied:
Another vote for Stewart Kerr.... I have been using him for years and he was trained by some of the best equine dentists in the country. He is licensened and certified to do equine dentistry but he is not a vet so has to have a vet there for the sedation. He is really gentle and knows his stuff. I also had Dr. Witt help me one time with my horse and he was great though it was not an equine dental appointment, he seemed like a very good vet. So, its nice to know we have two good choices.
Diane F. replied:
Dr. Witt has been my vet for years and I would trust him with any equine issues
Carol L. replied:
Dr. Witt checks his work afterwards and for the minis, he has mini floats. He also has a power float if your horse is in need of that as I have one old guy that needs one next month.
Dave R. replied:
Legal isn't always right Jenn. It's legal to own assault rifles but is it right. How many cases have you heard of Vets that have screwed up a horses mouths just because it is legal. I understand not having insurance to cover screwing up or should I say mal practice ins. How many cases against Vets are there for mal practice? I went to school with many Vets from all countries who were for having training for the Laypersons advancement. The the medical board could make a class just for Dentistry. All the classes that make it possible for someone to specialize in just Equine Dentistry. With sedation rights and insurance. It would be possible. It should be possible. I am not discounting all the education you and all the other doctors have gone through I'm just saying.
Dr Stewart kerr is still doing teeth we had our horses done a couple of months ago .
Sarah M. replied:
Dr. Witt just did our horse $100 and now he's a happy boy
Carleene C. replied:
Do you mean Dr Jamie Kerr? He does teeth. So does Stewart Kerr but I believe he is not a vet (not DR.) but I understand he is great with teeth. The legal issue was that only a vet can give sedation although I understand Stewart Kerr is really good at teeth because that is what he does- not all the other Vet things but got in trouble for giving sedation. I am not sure I have this completely correct but I believe so. Also, If I am correct they are not related. It is too bad vets stopped others from doing teeth because they were the specialists.
Marty B. replied:
I really like Steward Kerr and highly recommend him. I have organized clinics at my farm. he will come up from Santa Rosa area for 5-8--cannot remember. His Phone number is 707 388-1768 at home and his mobile is 789-9736. I will come if you arrange to do it with him. I might do each of my three horses depending on when because I would bring two over at a time.....Marty
Marta W. replied:
I use Stewart Kerr, who is an equine dentist, for my horses and am very happy with him. He is still practicing and he goes all over No. CA.

Robin K. replied:
All three vets are well qualified to do dental work for you. Maria Sanderson pointed out one good reason to use a vet for your dental work. Equine dentists might be great for the dental work, but they should not be giving your horse drugs!!!!

Cynthia B. replied:
Unless something is really serious and in need of more than routine maintenance, both Drs. Witt and Cronin should be able to assist you. If it is something serious, I would contact UC Davis or Dr. Katzoff who is/was with Loomis Basin Equine Hospital. Just know, horses don't always require a power float and the literature on equine denistry has swung back toward less is more the past 10 years. Until the horse is evaulated under anesthesia it is hard for the DVM to diagnose the appropriate treatment procedure. The treatment could range from just anesthsia costs to full power float ($80-275).
Ok... So I need to see a dentist, right away for a painful tooth. I'm probably going to have to have a root canal among other dental procedures. My dentist retired...
