Its new 16-room annex and two stunning apartments have an elegant boutique feel with lake views throughout. Price competitive compared to other downtown Como hotels. The wellness centre includes three types of sauna, a pool on the lake, and an ice alcove. Two restaurants. Own transport essential, even if hotel offers shuttle service 10am-6pm, into downtown Como (10-15mins): taxis are E25 one-way. Scheduled to open in June 2014, the Hotel Palazzo del Vice Re at Lezzeno, which is half-way between Como and Bellagio, (Località Pescaù 51, 031 952059/ www.palazzodelvicere.com, doubles from E272, closed Nov-Feb), is designed for the discerning. Above all else, guests to the hotel’s five rooms will be offered spectacular lake views never yet seen by tourists, since there are no hotels of note in this immediate area. If you’re on a budget, you can still have a drink in the bar and visit the hotel’s magnificient gardens, which include a water staircase, and much statuary. Its main Restaurant Gourmet (closed Mon except in summer) serves upmarket Italian fare (average €40), while the Pizzeria Victoria Grill does what it says. Vecchia Varenna (contrada Scoscesa 14, 0341 830 793, www.vecchiavarenna.it, closed Mon & Jan, average €35) is a little more experimental than most restaurants in town, with an emphasis on quality over quantity; book early, to get a table on the terrace overlooking the lake. Eremo Gaudio (0341 XXXX/www.eremogaudio.it/doubles €126-250) It’s all about location, location, location. Perched high on a cliff-face, this former hermitage affords incomparable views of Lake Como. If you have luggage, take a cab from the station (the road is steep!) to the reception area, and then take the private, panoramic funicular railway to your (no frills) room. When booking, ask for a room with a terrace. In Bellagio the well-appointed Hotel du Lac (piazza Mazzini 32, 031 950 320, www.bellagio hoteldulac.com, closed Nov-end Mar, doubles €175-€280) has been welcoming travellers for 150 years. Check out the owners’ boutique hotel, Hotel Bellagio (salita Grande 6, 031 950 424, www.hotelbellagio.it, doubles €80- €170): some rooms have a lake view. Facilities at the refined Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni (via Roma 1, 031 950 216, www.villaserbelloni.com, closed Nov-Mar, doubles €400-€932) include indoor and outdoor pools, sauna and Turkish bath, as well as spectacular spa, and out-of-this-world lake views. Non-residents can stop in for a €10 cup of Earl Grey in the ornate lounge where Churchill and JFK have sat (not together, obviously).
