Nancy is right, you have to be careful when dogs (and cats) get matted coats because the mats can actually pull the skin into the mat, and even tear the skin when the animal moves. This presents a challenge to the groomer because they have to be able t o determine if the skin is pulled into the mat, and if it is, they have to be able to safely detangle/breakup the mat before they can remove it. This may not apply to your dog, but once it gets to the point where the mats have some bulk, doing it right really is important. If that is the case, I'd find someone good over someone cheap.
