I've personally gotten work done at Jinx Proof in Georgetown and thought they did fantastic work. The shop minimum is about $60 which is standard, and it can get pricey (also standard, especially in DC). I believe as far as tattoos go you get what you pay for. Pay extra because if you try to be cheap, you will get a cheap tattoo that stays with you for a long time. Jinx Proof website can be found at http://www.jinxprooftattoos.com/

My lip piercing was done at Tattoo Paradise in Adams Morgan, and I plan on getting a tattoo there when I get more money. I've heard amazing things about the artists there, and their portfolios say a lot. I'm sure it is more expensive than places outside of the city, but tattoos aren't something to be frugal about. But if you're just getting a single word, I guess it doesn't matter. Just make sure the artists show clean line work in their portfolios, and hopefully find one that has examples of lettering. Most tattoo places make you pay a base rate of about $75-$100 if you are getting a simple tattoo like that that won't require an hourly rate, but you will need to stop in and ask the parlor yourself because they all differ.
