Looking for someone who works for DVLA/knows the legality of towing a trailer, weights etc for anyone who passed their driving test after 1st Jan 1997. Thanks!
Matthew C. replied:
I spoke to Bank Farm about hiring a trailer and they said I could tow it as long as I put L Plates on car and trailer and have somebody with either trailer test or pre 1998 licence in car with me as my licence would act as a provisional towing licence. Haven't tested this yet though

Michael, don't forget that not only do you have to take into account what your licence allows you to tow, you have to consider the weight which the towing vehicle can tow, the actual weight being towed, which can't be more than the vehicle can tow, the maximum weight the towing vehicle can carry' very important if carrying tools and wheels for a rally car, and the gross train weight which is the weight of the vehicle with everything in it, and the weight of the trailer. As to what you can tow, the back of your photo licence tells you what you can do, and there are pages on the DVLA website which tells you what it all means. There is also a DVLA page explaining how to calculate what you can tow for your vehicle. This might help https://www.gov.uk/driving-licence-categories
Jayson Millar is right if your van and the towed trailer/car exceed 3.5 ton you will get royally fucked. You need to have passed a test for anything weighting more than 3.5 ton.

I can't recommend Superior Transmissions in Silver Spring enough. They are very reasonable and do really great work. Barry is very honest and will tell you what kind of cost and repair you're looking at. I had transmission issues with my Subaru this summer and I was quoted at one mechanic for $1800+. I took it to another mechanic (Murray's in Silver Spring...also great) and they recommended I take it to Superior Transmissions which was right around the corner. They fixed my car for less than $400 and I was on my way. No problems since. Good luck!

I know an excellent mechanic who works from home in Columbus MD (he's retired from the shop and going to school).

James and Marco at Just Car Service in College Park (across from CP metro). Not sure if they offer tow services, but their rates are very good and they do solid work.

I go to GTS on 18 th **Place** NE. They can pick you up/drop you off at the Metro.

Distad's in Eastern Market. Inside a BP station on Pennsylvania. They are the best. I've gone there since I've had a car and my parents have gone there for maybe 20 years. Good prices and they are very straight forward. If you think you have an issue but you don't, they will send you on your way without any work done.
slamminbeers replied:
Your typical mechanic usually won't be able to repair or fix transmission issues. You may actually have to look for a transmission shop. Its not cheap either.

Uh...2003 Kia might be getting to the terminal stage, in all honesty. But Murray's Auto Clinic in DTSS (pretty close to the Metro) is a straight shooter and can tell you whether the repair is worth it. But, honestly, the story you tell and the fact that it's a 12-year-old Kia makes me fear for the worst.
PhonyUsername replied:
I am a mechanic. If you dont know of a local guy than take it to dealer. There are no kia experts outside of dealer. **You dont have to buy anything they recommend.** There are millions of great mechanics out here, but unless you know who to trust then at least find a company that will back up their work (kia corporate in your case). They have a saying - 'sometimes the cheapest people pay the most'.
