Very disappointed to discover that Chesters by the River AND the Drunken Duck both plan to 'go veggie', whilst I am not against establishments choosing their own paths...

Have to say since Chesters have gone veggie we haven't been not against it being vegetarian. But it has had an influence over if we stop there for lunch or not. We have two young kids who are partial to the occasional sausage roll and they used to have them. Drunken Duck does amazing local meat produce so will be sad if it's true to see that go. Again it will influence our decision to go there again. Variety is key in any establishement especially in rural areas. I've always wondered why you can't have a meat menu and a vegetarian/vegan menu, vegan especially needs more choice. How will this affect the brewery onsite or is that a veggie friendly beer?
The Eagles Head at Slattersthwaite is one of my favorites. Not sure if they do breakfast, but the food is amazing and they are very dog friendly:)
Jennifer M. replied:
Can I just ask how many of you have eaten at the Drunken Duck or Chesters. (I'm just curious so don't bite my head off) I always thought people just went to Chesters for their cake!? It is a rather bold move especially as they are remote restaurants. I have a feeling it won't really effect Chesters that much as most ppl do only go for the cakes. Not sure it's the greatest move for the Drunken Duck though as it is very expensive pub with a specific type of customer. With regards to the actual question. If your near Kendal, The 2 Sisters at Plumgarths do a good breakfast and a good afternoon tea too. Apple pie in Ambleside is good but can't remember exactly what they offer for breakfast. But there are a few nice cafes in Ambleside that will serve something good. In Staveley you can go to Wilfs but make sure you go to More Artisan while you are there and grab some muddies (the best brownies ever) they also do really good sarnies. I don't know a specific place in Windermere/Bowness as I tend not to go there but I'm pretty sure Lakeland Limited do breakfast til 11. Hope that helps.
Can anyone recommend a really nice restaurant for a family celebration meal? Ideally fairly local, a short taxi drive away

I find it really easy to find gluten free when visiting Keswick. Even fish & chips which I can't at home. One place, which is a little way out of Keswick which I can really recommend is http://www.thewhitemarehotel.co.uk -they can pretty much adapt any of their meals and great for Sunday lunches
Tracy J. replied:
If you are out & about further south into the Lakes, Lakeland First Floor Cafe is normally good for Coeliacs ( my sister & her two children are both coeliacs). Think most National Trust cafes are meant to be up to speed too but not definitely sure if this is across all NT properties or individual ones so worth ringing to check beforehand. Also try putting this post on the Coeliac Society page as I always find their members are a reliable upto date source of info for situations like this.

I am GF & live in the area, don't find eating in Keswick a chore as the majority of places gave GF options it are keen to accommodate. Merienda by Moot Hall is good. Abraham's above George Fisher too. Can recommend all the others people take mentioned
