Does anyone know a good arborist? I have a pine tree in my backyard that has a huge ivy vine wrapped around it and I want to have the tree's health checked.

Here we go, Sarah Gleim! I had to dig through old emails, but we talked to Robert from Boutte Tree. http://www.bouttetree.com/boutte-family-tree/our-team. He was recommended to us by my husband's high school friend who is a botanist and works at a nursery in Canton, so I felt good about the referral. Also, look at all the pretty internet awards and nice reviews on their website.

oh and here is one website I'm pretty sure we used for directions before! I am not sure if we will ever get our whole little forest over here cleared or not. But some day! http://www.theardens.com/weedEnglishIvy.htm

Chris Hastings with ArborMedics. He was recommended to me by two people (the head of a public garden and a landscape architect). He was very good!

Sarah Gleim we have crazy ivy problems too and we had several people help us this past year, a couple are friends of my husband and one is a really great arborist, I just have to get his name and number ... they also told us how to get rid of the ivy (at least for a while). one thing they look for I know is how high up the ivy has gone and how much of it is hanging off the tree branches, it can create "sails" that catch the wind and this is a big factor, and also just being up there makes it topheavy .... if you want to try to get rid of it using the non-toxic way, you have to cut it up nice and high, then ALSO down low, a big space apart, and pull the vines down off those several feet. can you picture this? it grows really fast, and I guess can grow back together ... anyway, then down at the bottom of the tree, you grab it and pull away from the tree as far as you can. the bigger an ivy-free circle you make around the tree, the longer your work will last. getting totally free of it requires a lot more work or a lot more money, but if you pull it far enough away, it will last for a while ... the stuff up top though will die without the water. it can take a surprisingly long time though!
