I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all the recollections people have posted about the physicians in Yazoo. But have been wondering if anyone has any information about a...

Willie Sudbeck HendersonI looked at my birth certificate and it looks like it's noted "J.O. James", address "Bentonia MS".

Joe Damiens: As it turned out, the incorrect birthdate was never an issue. As I said I had never used the date that is on the birth certificate, ever. The only time I recall it ever coming up was in the 2nd grade when Mrs. Raiford Martin, my teacher, pointed out the difference in the date on my birth certificate and the date of birth I had given her. I told her what happened, as it had been told to me and the school record was corrected (I even have these old school records of mine that were being disposed of several years ago and I was able to get mine before they were thrown away and the change is on there. My Social Security account was set up when I was about 18 using the correct date. I applied online for SS when I was 62, and was never asked to provide any documentation. I have been receiving my SS benefits for 5 years and now Medicare as well. I registered to vote at 18 using the correct date. My draft registration used the correct date; my employment with the Mississippi Public Employees Retirement System used the correct date. I've been receiving state retirement for 7 or 8 years. Again it was never an issue. I have even had the correct date carved in granite in a bench placed at my parents' grave in Concord Baptist Church Cemetery where my cremated ashes are to be placed. Some of this reflects back to a time when your word was not questioned as much as today, when you are asked to show ID now. Below, I am pictured sitting on the bench which will be my grave marker.

Dr. Shipp of Benton had his office in this building, the old Masonic Hall, as I recall.

Betteye Bolden: The last one room school house I remember in operation was in Little Yazoo before 1960 and it ended when Gibbs School was built near Bentonia and all the small schools consolidated to there.
Bobby B. replied:
John E. Ellzey, The one room school I remember was around 1946 or 1947 at Plainville, east of Bentonia. It was in the middle of a cotton field and I believe Mrs. Leola Dillard taught there. She is still living on Grand Avenue and is over 102. She is the lady who used to have the free sales at her house every year.
Bobby B. replied:
I also remember Dr. Shipp after he moved to the DeCell house on Broadway. He lived there with his wife and daughter, Dorothy Ford. Their back yard was bricked in and just across the street from our duplex on North Ward Street, next door to the Whitehead House now owned by Kaye Anderson Mills. They had a big yard of beautiful dahlias and brought loads of barnyard fertilizer to put around them. This was around 1969-70.
Wanda M. replied:
I remember Dr. Shipp being in Benton. I know that my brother, Ronnie, got a fish hook stuck in his head. Glynn accidently threw it there. He was taken to Dr. Shipp. At that time, Dr. Shipp could hardly see. He tried to cut it out and finally my brother, Glynn, cut it out for him. We all have laughed about this for years.
Marie M. replied:
Bobby BowmanI couldn't tell if that was an o or a v on my birth certificate, but it's so funny that we all have that in common, isn't it. It truly is a small world! Good morning. You've been on my mind. Hope you and yours are doing well.
June P. replied:
Willie Sudbeck Henderson Yes I remember Dr. James of Bentonia. He was our family's (Eddie & Ella Passons) doctor for a long time. His office was in the backroom of a service station located on the corner of main street. All the children looked forward to the ice cream cones purchased from the store, i.e., if we were GOOD !
Glenn B. replied:
Dr. James' office was in the Bentonia Drug Store, and they sold gas under the large cover in the front of the building. As I recall there were two pumps. Oil was kept to the right in cabinets that locked, located on the right as you drove in from the front. Dr. James' office was in the Drugstore during the 1930 s and most of the 1940 s as I recall. There was also a pharmacy in the store.
Elizabeth J. replied:
I remember Dr. James and Mrs. James too. Dr. James had a small office down in Bentonia...the last building next to Mrs. Puffer's home. It was a very tiny office. He was a pretty good doctor and used to make house calls. His wife was a Master Musician (Pianist). Mrs. James was a recluse and very seldom ever seen. There was reason that I won't mention here.
When I was born at Little Yazoo in 1947, I was delivered by a midwife. My mother said that Dr. James of Bentonia did not see me until quite some time later. When he sent in my birth certificate, it had the wrong date on it--March instead of May. It is still incorrect until this day, but I have never sought to have it changed. I've never used the March date on anything. The midwife was a black lady named Para Lee Marshall, who also lived at Little Yazoo until the tornado of 1971 blew her small cabin away. She lived on our place for some time after that until friends found her a place in Yazoo City where she lived until her death. Dr. James house is still standing in Bentonia. I think Eugenia Cox Walker owned it at one time. I remember going to an estate auction there probably 20 yrs. ago.
Marie M. replied:
John E. EllzeyShe may very well have delivered me as well. I looked at my birth certificate to see if anyone else was shown in attendance, but there's nothing there of course...I was born on the 11 th...looks like it wasn't registered in Yazoo til the 14 th. I still have the original Herald of that terrible afternoon when the tornado hit.
Glenn B. replied:
I recall Dr. and Mrs. J.V. James well, having grown up in Bentonia in the 1940s and 1950s. I believe he moved to Bentonia in the late 1920s or early 1930s after finishing medical school, I believe at the University of Tennessee. He lived from about 1930 until 1937 in the Ferriss house while Ernest Ferriss and family farmed the Cannon Place. I believe he had his office for many years at the Bentonia Drug Store, which also had a pharmacist. One of his nurses, who was with him until he retired in the 1960s or early 1970s from the Yazoo County Health Department, was Miss Carrie Bennett. She was with him at the Drug Store as well in offices built in the late 1940s or early 1950s behind the current Planter's Supply in Bentonia. Miss Bennett, who lived some of her time in Bentonia with Mrs. Shepard, who lived next to my parents, went fishing on Wednesday afternoon in the summer, when the office was closed, with my mother and me . Dr. James practiced medicine in Bentonia until probably the mid to late 1950s, when he left to become the Director of the Yazoo County Health Department. He remained in the latter job until his retirement. Dr. James' wife worked with him at the office next to the Puffer/Thompson/Taylor house. Dr. James nor his wife were very active publicly in Bentonia. His long hours and days I am sure meant that he stayed home when he was not working. Mrs. James died several years after he died. I do not know where they are buried.
Delila M. replied:
My Dad was searching for Dr. James to deliver me. Realized later the good Dr was delivering Buddy Smith!! He did make it to delver me!
John E. replied:
Glenn Alton Brumfield: John Velma James, M.D., was born Oct. 11, 1901 and died April 4, 1979. He and his wife Carrilee C. James are buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City.
