Anyone have any recommendations for a vet around Albany? Concerned about cat but don’t know where to go Any help is appreciated
ellydee replied:
I love our vet, Just Cats in Guilderland. All the vets and vet techs are very sweet and great at including the owner in conversations and decisions. Most of all when they make recommendations they don't pressure you to decide anything right away or even follow the recommendation at all, they provide you with options, educate, and let you make up your own mind.

There’s great people over at Albany County Vet Hospitable on Western. We’ve been going to them for our cats for years.

Not sure what area you’re in, but we travel from Colonie to Burnt Hills Veterinary because we like them so much. Our friend that recommended is to them has a bunch of cats, but we have a dog.

Shaker Vet in Colonie. Not cheap, but their hours and the staff are great.
flatlineskillz replied:
The staff at Bloomingrove animal hospital have been great every time I’ve brought my dog to them. They can certainly help with your cat.
roflcopterrr replied:
If I were you, i’d avoid Oakwood vet in Troy. They took my indoor-only cat in for a neuter and he was completely fine when they took his vitals before the procedure. I took him home the same day and four days later after refusing to drink and eat I took him back, and he was hypothermic - 15 degrees under the temp he was at when they did the initial vitals. He died a few hours later with a sudden onset of fluid in the lungs, and the vet denies that it was from the surgery. I find it hard to believe that the procedure had nothing to do with his sudden hypothermia, as his temp was fine at pre-op. To me, that’s indicative of infection or sepsis. RIP homie bowser ☹️☹️☹️

An adopter is looking for an affordable, quality vet in Richmond, El Cerrito or Albany, CA. Any recommendations?

We have be going to Richmond Vet Hospital. They are not fancy and no-nonsense, but they will listen to you if you have done your research. http://www.yelp.com/.../richmond-veterinary-hospital... Richmond Veterinary Hospitalwww.yelp.com Veterinarians in Richmond, CA

I second Richmond Vet. I've had great experiences with them and they are very affordable. My friend in El Sobrante also takes her kitties there. Great staff and great vets.

Check out Boght Veterinary Clinic. North end of Latham.
VicePrincipalNero replied:
I thought Shaker was really expensive with terrible service. We had a pet who needed meds for a chronic condition. We would call ahead the day before but the prescription was never ready at the pick up time we were given and the staff would be really nasty about it. We switched to Boght Vet and found them to be much cheaper. They don't do very complicated treatment but are great for basic care.

We take our cat to Shaker Vet and love them!

For vaccines, PetCo does a clinic every once in a while ("VetCo") which is lower in cost than doing them at the vet's office. Use their website to find out when it's going to be around here again (they rotate between stores in the region). I recommend getting there a little before advertised opening time.
mimulus_monkey replied:
$200 for an exam? Where did you go and what is included in that exam? That price isn't just an exam. Albany county does free rabies vaccines at clinics throughout the year, so you can save that way.
sassafrass281 replied:
Some vets will allow you to discuss cost and payment. You have your pets best interest in mind, take your quote and explain you want to use their services but cannot afford that cost. Working in business, one thing I’ve learned is everything is negotiable. Some business is better then no business. Especially when it’s for a good cause. They should want to help you. Good luck with your pet.

For more serious stuff, Albany County Veterinary Hospital near Stuyvesant Plaza has been good to us (2 dogs, 1 cat).
airwreckam replied:
I always wonder what the standard prices for vet services are. But, I know Banfield has wellness plans where you pay a monthly premium and specific services are covered for the year. Not sure if its worth it the money but always interesting to look into, I suppose: https://www.banfield.com/pet-healthcare/optimum-wellness-plans/dog-wellness-plans Good luck!
babyshark12 replied:
Sand creek can be ridiculously expensive sometimes. Colonie animal hospital on central looks like a hot mess from the outside (bright yellow building) but I have found the vets to be friendly and done successful surgeries on my dogs. Their prices are much more reasonable.
angisfab replied:
We used to go to Central Vet when we were in Albany, but now we go to Bayberry Vet on New Loudon Rd (across from Paesan’s). Highly recommend both.
ExigentKleenex replied:
Wow, thanks so much for all of the responses guys! Based on the feedback here and my research, I've decided to go with Shaker :)
Does anyone know a good decent reasonably priced veterinarian in the Albany, NY area? My poor kitty cat is having very bad asthma attacks.

James Burns in Latham.

We had a pretty good experience with The Village Animal Clinic in Voorheesville, and it was less expensive than the vet on Central Ave. in Albany.
Justin M. replied:
Dr. Stone of Bloominggrove Vet Clinic in East Greenbush- best around!
Karen F. replied:
Did you call local humane society for a recommendation? They or local rescue group may know of lower cost vet. Rescue group gave us name of vet who did Mollys leg for a third of original quote.
Amanda V. replied:

We've had a few TBs over the years that don't want to eat their grain meals, I've had great luck starting them on Dengie, getting them to start eating that and slowly adding grain. Dengie is the UK product, Lucrene Farms HiFi works, Blue Seal has a Dynasty Forage and Triple Crown Alfalox works as well. The Triple Crown Alfalox supports an ulcer horse as well. The SmartGut in a paste/tube works a little better then straight Probios for us to perk their appetite as well.

Hi Neighbors. Can anyone recommend a nearby veterinarian who is really good and patient with cats?
Debbie S. replied:
Reid Veterinary. They are all great, but Dr Peterson is our favorite.
Carolee G. replied:
There is NONE better than Dr. Tim Reid of Reid Veterinary Hospital
Molly M. replied:
Dr. Ben Braat at Linn Vet
Debbie S. replied:
Be careful with Dr Braat we had major issues him and his office. Almost killed our lab from being careless. also like to prolong pets lives when they clearly are in pain. So please be careful.
Rhiannon A. replied:
If you have any problems getting in at Reid I am a huge fan of Drs. Fletcher and Glaze at Albany Animal Hospital.
Jeff L. replied:
I second Ms. Sommers' recommendation of Reid's. Also, Dr. Heider has returned to that practice. Doctors Tim, Peterson and Heider will be great for your cat. Dr. Van's dental specialty is also an added strength to their well rounded practice. Tell them Suzy Fong & Jeff sent you; in addition to Frau Sommers.
Caroline S. replied:
Dr. Braat was our vet some years ago for our kitties. His prices are very competitive and I really liked that he had a separate cat and dog waiting room. I also have other friends that highly recommend him. We've been going to Reid for the last 12+ years and I really like all the doctors and staff--and believe me, with 4 cats and foster cats off and on, I've met them all! They are caring and compassionate, as well as conscientious about the financial and emotional well being of both pet and owner. We had to put two separate kitties down for terminal illnesses over the years, one while I was 7 months pregnant. I sobbed like crazy and they hugged me and gave me time, even offered to call to have someone pick me up. The next time both kids were in the room during the final medication. They answered questions from the kids so gently and gave me time to compose myself for their sake. A lovely letter came in the mail from the staff involved both times. Surely whoever you go with will give your kitties the best care they possibly can. Best of luck to you and your fur-babies!
