Salmon Brook vets. Been going there for 25+ yrs. All the vets and staff are wonderful!!

I recently switched from Simsbury Vet to Salmon Brook. Dr Groshek was very helpful and informative about Sonny's allergy problem. However, if he is kicking one back Pawsitive, and no others, it doesn't sound like allergies. Food allergies that effect skin will show up as redness between the toes and on the belly. Many lick the feet to sooth the itch. A hot spot is an allergic reaction to a contact allergen. They can happen quickly and are ugly open sores. Since he is licking one pay and you didn't mention a sore, I suspect a minor injury or irritation. Perhaps to ice melt?
Chantal C. replied:
Hi I agree Dr. Peter Korten or Salmon Brook. I was advised to go to Southwick Veterinary Hospital but they have been bought out by a larger firm and it isn't the same level if care as it use to be
Mike G. replied:
Simsbury Vet. Dr Korten.
Beth M. replied:
Definitely NOT Dr Korten.
Michelle H. replied:
Interesting comment Carol-Ann. I will say, we did try Southwick out, becuase many told us they were cheaper and Salmon Brook IS expensive, plus we did not like 'all' of the vets threre as much as Dr Violette. We met three different vets at Southwick, and had problems with paperwork (including rabies vaccination and our dog's name) being incorrect. We had an emergency and called Salmon Brook and saw Dr Violette again. I later asked my spouse this, 'If we are at the mercy of whomever they give us in both places and our preferred vet is not available in either place, where should we go?' We both fully agreed Salmon Brook. It is worth the extra $ we pay to go there. They are successful for a reason, and you can tell when you go in there, with the way they operate and how happy the staff is.

Elizabeth, we have a GSD who is fear aggressive, with other dogs, but also will yelp and turn at you if you hit her hurting spots. Dr. Violette at Salmon Brook is amazing wiht her. He is like a dog whisperer. Best of luck to you!

Simsbury vet! I have lots of friends with pits who LOVE Simsbury vet!!
Kerry B. replied:
We have 3 pit bull mixes. We like Dr. Kirk at Salmon Brook Vet Hospital. We have seen other doctors there but prefer her. I have found they are a bit more expensive than expected but our level of care has been great. If you need only a nail trim the groomer that is part of horses and hounds just did a great job on my oldest pittie who usually has to be muzzled and she only muzzled him for one foot. Salmon Brook will include a 'free pawicure' when you come in for your appointments.
Kristen D. replied:
Definitely dr korten at Simsbury veterinary. He is wonderful with our pit
Kara D. replied:
My dog is not a pit but very anxious at vet to the point that she tries to bite them during nail cutting. We went fur Simsbury vet hos for years but had to find someone that could do her nails with less drama. Also tried sal Brooke then heard about dr Huntington at suffield vet hos...she is amazing. First one in years to cut her nails with minimum anxiety

Donna N. replied:
Deborah Behuniak Haydock is spot on about the need for your cat to be able to feel superior by getting up in high places. The cat towers and shelves are excellent ideas. Creating a cat super highway is the idea here, so he can navigate a large space from up high. Not a bad idea to contact the cat daddy, Mr. Jackson Galaxy of My Cat From Hell for help. It will be difficult to place a senior cat in another home, but not impossible. Just hate to see him be more stressed by leaving the family he's always known. Then again, cats are so adaptable...Best of luck to you and your entire family.
Cats primarily spray when threatened and of course, if they are not fixed they need to mark territory. I saw this on Cat Whisperer...cat was hormonally crazy from not being spayed...also, they were not giving cat it's own space. When they fixed cat and built some tall shelves for cat to go to, all spraying stopped. I'm a big believer in cat trees...cats need to get away from stressor and they adore being up high. I know this is a tough problem, but I believe you can fix it with patience. This cat would be put down if brought to Humane Society or other kill shelter.
