Does anyone have any good resources/tips for painfully tight hamstrings? I have been going to pilates, which is helping from a strength perspective, but I can't seem to...

I like the Lolo performance stretching app on iTunes. You can incorporate the devices you have access to in order to customize the routine. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/performance-stretching/id658103456?mt=8

I highly recommend the Ki-Hara Stretching taught at Human HyperFormance LLC Center for Advanced Anti-Aging. I have been taking classes there for over 2 years and have noticed a big difference in my flexibility. PLUS, he is a former running coach and he has given me some great advice to help improve my endurance and strength. He lets you take your first class free so you can try before you buy so to speak. And the stretches are VERY easy to do at home once you learn them.
Jen M. replied:
if you can't go to classes, do yoga at home and lots of stretching (like down dog, etc.) and also stretching with a yoga strap. http://blog.walkjogrun.net/2013/04/28/yoga-poses-for-runners-hamstrings/ Also--the hot yoga spot has a class called Hot Flexibility Flow, I love it.
Jen M. replied:
Yogadownload.com also has some free yoga for runners classes. they are downloadable mp3 files. i believe you can also search for other classes that focus on other parts of the body, too. the free classes are 25 min long, with the option of buying the longer version.

Hi Jennifer O'Connor Teepe. I am very new to running and triathlon so please take my suggestion with a grain of salt... I believe regular yoga will NOT help you and certainly not a short session. If you are an YMCA member please consider attending hot yoga sessions (82 to 88 degrees). Classes are typically 1 hr15 min long. Hot yoga WILL allow you to gain greater flexibility. The classes are conducted at the Wilton branch, which is very close to exit 15 on I-87. You can see all the classes available at http://saratogaregionalymca.org/files/Wilton-Yoga-Schedule.pdf.

Can't speak to the "painfully" part, "But you’ve probably noticed that the more you run, the harder it is to touch your toes. This loss of flexibility is a natural adaptation to training that makes you more economical. It may seem like a negative effect, but it’s actually a positive one, and you don’t want to interfere with it by doing too much stretching." from http://running.competitor.com/2013/11/training/study-better-runners-are-inflexible_38726

How about a foam roller? It certainly helps my calves and thighs. And you can do it at home. A little ways down this page is an excellent video. http://skinnyms.com/foam-rolling-the-best-kept-secret/
I'm looking to get a yoga for runners dvd to use at home. Does anyone have a recommendation on one they like and find helpful?

Can anyone recommend a good orthopedist in the Capital area who either specializes or has helped with an achilles injury? I was not happy with the doctor I saw (who told...
Ryan N. replied:
Not an Ortho, but I suggest Dr. Bath at Proactive Chiropractic in Clifton Park. As long as it is not a tear/stress fracture and just inflammation, he will get you back to running great again!!!!
Dallas D. replied:
Dr Shatynski is an Ortho. A lot of the runners in the area go to see him. He is an ironman and gets us. He will get you to the right person if he can't help you. He recommended me to see Dr Bath that Ryan suggested. Probably a lot quicker to get into see Bath vs Shatynski.
Larry S. replied:
I have a friend who also sees Dr Shatynski for other foot related issues and he is thrilled with him.. I hope you find someone who can help ya!!!:(
Amy M. replied:
I've seen Dr. Bath for two different injuries, both times I have felt better very quickly. Usually able to get same day appointment.
