Where can I find a secular therapist? I've been struggling with depression and I'm working up the nerve to actually try to get some help. I live in Alabama though, right...

* http://seculartherapy.org Yes, it's legitimate. It's a database of therapists that you can review. They vet their therapists to make sure that they will not drag religion in as a 'solution', though the individual therapist may themselves be religious. If you want more, I can dig up some interviews. They've done the circuit of atheist podcasts.

Am currently in grad school to become a therapist. It's against the NASW code of ethics for therapists to discriminate based on religious beliefs (or lack thereof). For example, I myself am an atheist, but when I have religious clients, I support them in utilizing their religion as a strength. A good therapist is there to support you in utilizing and building on whatever tools give you strength to improve your well-being, despite their own beliefs. My advice would be to try and find a licensed therapist since they are legally bound to the code of ethics. Sending positive vibes your way! :)

If I may, my mother is a social worker and therapist and I have had a few therapists throughout the years. Their job is to help you and be impartial about religious affiliation. I know it is ideal to go to someone who is not religious, but when you can't find someone who isn't (I live in the bible belt too), therapists are supposed to be a blank slate for you to tell your worries to.

I'm so glad you asked about this (and that others answered.) I had a negative experience with a therapist who I thought was secular until our 4 th or 5 th meeting, when I had to drop her. It's good to know about these resources for finding a secular professional.
Faolyn replied:
Read the therapist's website carefully. The last place I went to said that they used "evidence-based treatments" which is code for no prayer or "alternative medicine," even though the word secular didn't appear on the site.

You may be able to get a list of in-network providers from your insurance, and then cross-reference them on Psychology Today to make sure it is a good fit. Best of luck to you.

I’m not sure what your idea of affordable is, but the Potomoc Center is worth checking out. It’s a fairly large practice of a bunch of different kinds of therapists. I’ve been a patient of two of them and have had a very positive experience.

Neighborhood Health offers reduced price counselling to low-income residents. I don't remember what it takes to qualify but you might want to look into that. http://neighborhoodhealthva.org

Dave Cavanaugh is in Alexandria and if you tell him you’re struggling with payments, he will work with you on a sliding scale. He’s wonderful.

What kind of therapy are you looking for? I can recommend Dr. Caroline Ratner-Fitzgerald if you're looking for a well educated and intelligent talk therapist or Freudian analyst. But if you want a friend who will work with you like a behavioral therapist, I'd look for someone else.
