Can anyone recommend any good hostels in Amsterdam? I will likely be traveling to the city alone for ~6 days and want to do touristy stuff (museums, coffee shops,...

The Flying Pig is pretty solid. The one I am thinking of is about a 5 minute walk from the Central train station and right in the heart of the craziness.

yeah, flying pig is the big famous one... and its really not so much big as just full of character. I also stayed in one called The White Tulip, it wasn't so bad and much cheaper as it was in the red light. For a neat experience, book a night or two at the Flying Pig and then book a night at the Flying Pig Beach Hostel, they have shuttles a few times a day between the two, its not Amsterdam but its a quaint coastal town.

I've stayed in the Hansbrinker. Was fairly standard and was fairly straightforward to walk into town.

I stayed at a place outside Amsterdam (in Abcoude) called [Lucky Lake] (http://lucky.greenwave.nl/). I can't recommend it enough!

I'd visit the [Large Hadron Collider](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider) in Geneva, one of the most complex scientific projects of all time. You get to visit two exhibition centres open to the public which are extremely cool if you're into this kind of stuff. They have lots of cool gear on display, including the world's first web server.

There are lots of things to do in Amsterdam. You should totally visit the Stedelijk museum, also the flower market and rent a bike you can see a lot more with it. For coffee shops My favorites are Dampkring (the interior is just amazing) and Hunters Cafe (it's near the Red light District)
