My partner and I went in December 2015. We met three American cyclists. They booked through a Canadian operator and flew via Mexico and had to carry cash. ATMs do not accept American issued cards yet. I have a downloadable ~GPX of the route we took in the East and useful information. http://www.farawayvisions.com/bikepacking/bikepacking-cuba/

Here's the response from the Aussie lady: "Yes sure! We just confirmed the self-guides tour. The man I've been dealing with has been great, answering all my questions. The cost ended up being around $1500 usd for the both of us. We are doing San Fran to santa barbara over 9 days and includes a sunset kayak tour in morro bay! Their bikes look decent and it includes racks, paniers, locks, helmets, water bottles, repair kit. Im really happy with the service we've received so far!" http://www.californiabicycletour.com/bike/self-guided-sf-la.php

I rented a Fuji touring bike from the Bike Hut (Pier 40, Embarcadero at Townsend, San Francisco, CA 94107) for an overnight trip to Bodega Bay last year. The bike was in good condition. I had my own panniers. Definitely recommend (esp because it supports a good cause)
Okay. I know this is probably the millionth time I've asked this, but I am STILL looking for:

Question from the inbox ~ We are moving to Fort Wainwright Alaska next year, and I am so lost. I was hoping that someone could pass on some tips, and advice please. We...
Nikki S. replied:
Oh, how I miss Wainwright! Our absolute favorite post so far. We lived on post for a year (a good chance to get our bearings, adjust to the cost of heat(!), and for a quick commute for my husband. We lived in North Town and the houses were a great size and the community center (indoor playground, coffee shop, movie nights) was just a few blocks away. We drove from Fort Gordon, GA and it was absolutely wonderful. We traveled with our three boys (ages 1, 3, and 4 at the time) and two dogs. Winter travel can be tricky, especially in northern Canada, so I would really look into various options, including the ferry. After a year on post, we ended up buying a home in the hills off of Chena Hot Springs Rd and currently rent it out. The hills are above the inversion (ice fog), so the temperature at our house would be only ten below instead of the thirty below on post (invest in some good winter gear and get outside! Even if it is -20 or -30, otherwise it can be very easy to get the winter blues. Vitamin D supplements and Veralux "happy" lights also help tremendously). I would also suggest winterizing your vehicles in the Lower 48 (auto start is awesome and you will need to be able to plug in your vehicle- the parking lots all have outlets). Blizzaks or studded tires will help as well. I also agree with black out curtains for the summer
I'm currently at Fort Wainwright and work for the school district. There is one elementary school on post but they will only attend if you live on the south side of base. I travel between schools so I've been in most of them, my honest opinion would be live somewhere of farmers loop road and in the Pearl Creek district. That's one of my favorite elementary schools and the middle school connected to that district is nice too (Randy Smith middle school). In reality you can winterize your own vehicles if you have someone mechanically inclined. I bought the battery blanket, oil pan heater, and engine block heater from Amazon and my dad and husband did it in a day. The engine block one was probably the only one I couldn't have done myself honestly . The drive is beautiful and I loved it. Get the Milepost, also on Amazon to help plan. There is a hot springs in Canada you can stop at, there is Banff national park in Canada that is beautiful. If driving in better weather definitely take advantage of those stops. I buy Columbia coats and snow pants. Found boots in Amazon rated for -50 degrees. It's not so bad here, but make sure you have Amazon prime... So worth it!
