The Public C7 or the Electra Amsterdam are nice choices.

Tried out the Globe Roll 8 and old style bianchi milano last weekend at Outback Bikes. Both very nice rides, the milano is on the strong maybe list, she liked the Globe a lot, but not the maroon color. John McNicholas - the Public looks good, but she hasn't liked the feel of the dutch bikes she's ridden so far. Hadn't seen the electra - WAY nicer looking than the cruiser style electras. Need to do those and the trek this weekend.

Thanks for the various suggestions - as an update, my wife is the proud owner of brand new, 2010 Bianchi Milano Dama Alfine from Outback bikes. FWIW - Bike South has an awesome fitting machine and a solid selection of ladies and commuter bikes as well. http://www.bianchiusa.com/uploads/pics/09_xt_mil_alf_w_wht.gif

I'm 5'4" as well, that's not that small and size shouldn't be an issue in any of these stores. I have many lady friends who bought Linus bikes from Loose Nuts, I think Rachel Poretsky has mentioned that Atlanta Bike Tech sells Public bikes, Houndstooth Rd will definitely have lots of choices, and like Barry said, most bike shops will too. And yes, the Atlanta BeltLine Bicycle (on the BeltLine just north of Irwin, or also accessible via Sampson St) is what was formerly Avondale Cycles. Rachel Gage is selling her Public bike but it's a large so it might be too big.
Jonathan P. replied:
I hit Intown, they're the closest shop to me and I like them. They had several step throughs in stock (the Jamis are semi-mixte) - lower to middle of the road price-wise. Houndstooth Road had several, but while she liked the looks, theirs are as heavy as her current steel mt. bike with road tires and a 3 speed for Atlanta commuting is iffy. Peachtree Cycles carries several lines of bikes that have mixe and step throughs (specialized, roll, felt, koa), but they and Performance only had a couple lower bikes in stock. We're getting rid of a car, so I'm wanting to spend a fair amount on a really nice ride - but ordering a $1000+ bike without being able to test ride is quite a leap of faith.
Jonathan P. replied:
they carry the lines, but don't have the higher end bikes. Peachtree Cycles has loads of normal top tube road bikes in the $1,500-$4,000+ range, but hardly a commuter bike in the store and only 2 step through frames - both lower end $300 or so.

You can bridge the gap between good used and cheap fixer upper by going to either SOPO Bikes in Grant Park or the original BeltLine Bike Shop in Adair Park - they are both non-profits and will help you select and tune up a donated bike in exchange for a reasonable donation ($50-$100) and your own elbow grease.
Patrick C. replied:
Loose Nuts Cycles has used bikes and not far from GSU being close to Grant Park.

David Evans, $600 will get you a good quality commuter bike that you don't have to worry about. New with a warranty for daily use is hardly a luxury when it's your transportation.

Intown Bikes is really the commuter-bike store. Not that others do not do good work. As with the others, Mike and company are quite skilled with the bikes and spot-on in the customers department. Also, if you need some odd-ball part (my recent need was an older cantilever brake straddle cable), they likely have it. Last, I'm pretty sure they do not do any welding.

Loose Nuts Cycles appreciates older/custom frames and will definitely give you the real story on the likelihood and quality of a frame repair. And if it's a worse case scenario and you've gotta get a new ride, they'll set you up with exactly what you want.

Barry H. replied:
Intown Bikes (on Monroe, right by the Beltline entrance) also knows a good deal about, and has many parts for, older bikes. For instance, I separately needed a weird straddle cable for an older brake set and pins for cottered cranks. They had several of both odd-ball, older items on hand. They've also been in business long enough (and have experienced mechanics) such that older parts are handy and they know how to work with them.
