Hello friends, does anyone have any recommendations on shipping a bike (bike shipping services vs checking as baggage with delta, boxing the bike, etc)?

Might want to post here as it has been discussed before: https://www.facebook.com/groups/FullyLoadedBicycleTouring/?fref=ts

How money do you have? or shipbikes.com & bikeflights.com

I did something similar earlier this year. I have a thick plastic travel bike case that is about 11 x47 x30 and weighs about 30 pounds. It is similar to this: http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1158559_-1_400174__400174

I have a breakdown bike with S & S couplers, and take it on the plane -- but heard about bikeflights.com as another way.

I got a Ritchey Breakaway road bike in 2014. It disassembles to pack in a suitcase sized bag for travel. I have taken it to Hawaii, California, Kansas, etc. -- all as a normal piece of checked baggage. Have never paid a fee. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqFh9 drpPLI

Anyone here have good information on shipping/flying with a bike? I'm debating going to Milwaukee with my bike and I'm trying ti figure out how much it's going to cost.
Michael W. replied:
fly or ship, it's expensive. i flew mine to michigan last year with a box i rented from http://www.atlantabiketravelcaserentals.com/.
Daniel B. replied:
AirTran on Kayak.com: $282 r/t nonstop, Aug 7-10. They charge $100 for the bike each way ($25 first checked bag fee PLUS $75 bike fee last time I checked). I have a bike bag you can borrow, easy to stay under the 50 lb weight limit. You only have to lower the seatpost and take the bars off the stem. One note: many sites listing airline bike fees are outdated, best to check each airline's website for latest fee info on the route you plan to take. They range from free (uncommon) to $200 each way, even higher international. http://www.evocsports.com/bike/bike-travel-bags/bike-travel-bag
Timothy C. replied:
Check with Bikeflights.com, and ship it. They have a discount deal with a shipper. I used it to ship my bike from Atlanta to Monteray Bay. They had the lowest price by far- even a direct quote from the shipper themselves. I picked up a box from a bike shop, pipe insulation, packed, taped and shipped. Much easier than flying with a bike as well.

Bobby B. replied:
Most bike shops can hook you up with a free cardboard bike shipping box. Take your wheels and cockpit off, carefully pack the box. Print a label from http://www.shipbikes.com/, send your bike to destination and then box it up and send it home. Shipping is pretty reasonable and might be cheaper than an airline, plus no TSA folks getting into your box and being unskilled enough to repack the box properly.
So I stopped ordering from Uline because of their anti-gay/anti-trans bullshit that they are spewing, and go with Shippingsupply.com.... Mid order they decided to change...

I buy poly mailers via co-ops because I can get 100 for around $4. This is the site that all the co-ops buy fromt hough and retail isn't bad. https://www.upaknship.com/

Uline and Shipping Supply Shipping costs are so expensive. Any other cheaper options? I am glad you posted this as I was just looking at Uline.
Completed my first purchase from the incredible Eric Anthony Leong. Smooth deal and lightning fast shipping. Cannot recommend him more highly!
Jeremy B. replied:
Yes! Eric is a class act. I've purchased a couple great pieces from him over the years (my fav being a pistol from Terminator 2). He does his homework and knows his stuff! Highly recommend. His website is screencaptured.com ...right Eric Anthony Leong?

Technically, yes but I'm still working on the site. My direct link on here is best. That or just call me 6784729876eric@screencaptured.com

Have you thought about using a pod? That will get it shipped but you’ll have to assemble it yourself.

Try Roadie.com. Worked out great for me. Good prices.

An option would be to call a hot shot service in town and see if you can schedule a standard delivery. Don't know if they will do "non urgent" delivery's but it wouldn't hurt to call. I pay $500-700 to have a 1500+lb item brought from LA to Bakersfield within a few hours without any notice.

Could you rent a van (like a suburban or grand caravan, etc) and lay the seats down? It's how I moved to my current apartment, using my parent's cars for the larger furniture.
ImThaBean replied:
I know you said you can't rent a Uhaul. Couldn't you get a friend to rent and go with you? A 10' Uhaul 1-way from Bako to Frisco would be about $250. You can find day labor movers to load in Bakersfield and the same in Frisco for $100 or less per city. All said and done. That is around your $500 price point. Or, if said friend has a truck and you don't mine 2 round trips. You can rent a 6 x12' trailer for a day for $30. Pick up in Bako at noon. Load up and head up to frisco. Unload and drive back the next morning and drop off.

Greyhound package service is pretty cheap, but they won't disassemble or pack for you. Maybe you can find someone on Craigslist to do that for a small fee.

Alright mini fam, it's time to replace my hpfp, it's no longer covered under warranty so I'm looking for a replacement, while I'm at it I want to replace my timing chain...
Ian L. replied:
Chain is a big job. If I had to do that I would ask Thomas Dunaway Sr. for tips. His advice has saved me time and money when I did my clutch. He actually did the chain on my car. If mine went again, not sure I'd be confident enough to deal with timing... might get him to do it again. Haha
