Gym recommendation thread I just moved to Baltimore and am looking for a good gym to join that is reasonably priced. Would like access to a pool but it is not essential....

These are the usual recommendations for the area: https://merrittclubs.com/locations/canton/ - expensive, crowded, but best location https://www.wellbridge.com/maryland-athletic-club/harbor-east - Probably expensive, I hear good things about this gym though. About 1.5 miles from Canton http://www.goldsgym.com/dundalkmd/ - Cheap, but outside of the city. Not sure if there is a pool or not. The prices vary based on plan. I'm not sure of the MAC pricing, but Merritt cost me about $90 a month when I was going there. I think that Gold's Gym is around $15-$20 per month.
sgm1017 replied:
http://peakbaltimore.com/ is great. No pool, but small group classes that really push you. Plans run from $59-119 a month, but you can do a trial month for $49 (you just need to cancel the week before it renews).
ChampagneKnight replied:
I'd stay away from Merritt in Canton unless you enjoy working out alongside douchebags taking duck lip selfies during their curl sets. If you're looking for a low key place I'd recommend [Meadow Mill Athletic Club.](http://www.meadowmill.com) Most of the members are old and don't give a fuck. They're also mainly there to play squash so the weight room is almost always empty and there's always a cardio machine available. There's also a hot tub, but no swimming pool. I believe they let you try it out for one month free of charge and if you sign up for a year they give you two months free. I was paying $70 a month, but that was about 4 years ago. Good luck.
Choogly replied:
Not to be "one of those", but I'm pretty sure there will be a planet fitness near you. Very cheap, and you'll have everything you need to get or stay in good shape.
ruffruffimadog replied:
I'd avoid Merritt. Not sure about the Canton location, but the Fort Avenue one is pretty bad. Overpriced, overheated, overhumid, and chock full of dbags. Just once I'd like to be able to work out after 4 pm without feeling like I've wandered onto an overcrowded film set for the Jersey Shore. I can't imagine Canton's much better. It's $79/month, though I think they've raised it since I signed up. There is a "young professionals" discount, but apparently you have to be under 25 for that, which is just laughable.
The_Waxies_Dargle replied:
GOOD: Henson, Morrison, Carey, Brown, Palmer. OK: Harbaugh. BAD: Jones. Really, it just comes down to what you're looking for. If you need a charismatic frontman for a psychedelic 60's band...or a Hall of Fame pitcher who never allowed a grand slam, you're in luck. If however you're looking for someone to lead your cult (and prepare the occasional pitcher of kool-aid) I'd strongly recommend going in another direction. Again, it's all about what you're looking for.

Today I used a free one day pass I got in a swag bag to the Under Armour gym on Light Street. It was actually incredible! The lay out is great. The employee who showed me around was nice and didn't engage in any sales pitch, so I don't know if it is reasonably priced or not.
fedchill replied:
Unless you NEED a pool bar with overpriced drinks then Merritt isn't worth it. They do a young professional rate that is around 55 bucks (unless you're over 25). They are open 24 hrs though. One of the chain places isn't too bad either. Have a friend who worked in the county but lived in the city and used a place in Glen Burnie I think.
bmore_saor replied:
Merritt is an overpriced shit hole. I would go anywhere else.

The Maryland Athletic Club in harbor east is pretty nice and a reasonable bike ride from canton
AdmiralLobstero replied:
I workout at the Merritt in Canton and like it. I pay $60 or so, bit have discounts. It can be a little crowded from about 5 am to 7 am then again from about 5 pm to 7 pm. Even then though, you're not fighting for equipment. Tons of great classes too if that's your thing. Plus it's actually IN Canton.
I am looking for a gym in Jerusalem - with lots of pilates and zumba classes. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Have you considered the UA gym at 10 light? http://www.fxstudios.com/10-light-street-options.html I have been there a few times. It has everything you need, and its only 50 bucks a month. I am sure they will let you check it out first. The only problem I had, depending on when you go, is parking is kind of a pain. They may have some sort of parking for members, but I am unsure.

I go to crossfit federal hill. Might be out of your price range, but they have basically unlimited rack space, jerk blocks, plenty of bumper plates, and decent barbells. I've heard that rack space is in high demand at Merritt. I had issues with my gym before this one being hogged by bros doing god knows what in the only rack for like 40 minutes. Also the knurling on the barbells sucked. That Colosseum gym looks good, but I am not really willing to drive to the county. There is also a powerlifting gym in far east Baltimore (the name is escaping me) that might have weightlifting platforms.
We're looking for your favorite personal trainers, gym instructors and fitness gurus in and around Baltimore.

We have a groupon available. $40 for one month unlimited classes at CrossFit Sky Soldiers. Reference this and try us for a month. Our rates are some of the best in the area at $100 a month unlimited training with a year contract. We also offer discount for police, fire, and military.

Trinity CrossFit in Pelham is absolutely worth the extra few minutes drive. Great group of folks (of all ages and skill level) that go there, and you won't find a better coach than Mark T Smith . Been going 2 years now, and actually making my return today after "maternity leave". We'd love to have you come check out a class with us smile emoticon I'd be happy to come with you for the first time so it's not so intimidating

Merritt Fort Ave is already 24/7 but isn't cheap. It runs about $90 a month give or take. I've heard Knockout Fitness has a fantastic crossfit program if that's what you're into. I know they offer more classes at a variety of times than the average crossfit gym.

There's a new gym in the Shoppers Shopping center. I believe that classes are free this week: http://www.reflexfitbaltimore.com/

The gyms in the area are more for general fitness. For weightlifting and strength sports, I would recommend Colosseum Gym in Columbia. Great environment, and they have multiple yokes, stone sets, logs, etc. Plus 2 platforms in the powerlifting area. Chalk is encouraged.
Aung A. replied:
Meritt Athletic Club. They have locations in Fed, Canton, Downtown and other suburban places around the city and half of them are 24/7 locations including the one in fed. If you are a smooth talker, you can try negotiating also. Their pools are also salt water chloride of some kind which is the popular choice of water in the 21 st century.
Can anyone help me find a good gym that's not too expensive and also has personal trainers? I would prefer it to be in the Cockeysville, Timonium vicinity, thank you...
