Debbie suggest whoever you select suggest you also add the company to Homestars.com and write a review about their service on the site. They are an amazing online community for homeowners and just in the process of launching here in Atlantic Canada. They are an incredible Canadian success story and on Profit's 500 fastest growing companies. Also if you are the first to write a review about a company on their site they are also offering a $10 gas card. Check them out.

Metal roofs (that look like shingles once installed) are awesome and will last your lifetime and probably another one after that. 15-20k though.
The biggest issue with a metal roof is if you have to get up on it to clean your chimney, inspect gutters etc... it is much slicker than asphalt and very dangerous when wet or snow covered. If you have a low pitch roof and experience snow accumulation, the snow build up will come down fast when it does.
As for the noise of rain on metal, as long as the roof is properly sheathed/insulated the pitter patter is barely noticeable. I quite enjoyed the sound to tell the truth.
Can't recommend any roofers as mine (a past house) was done 20+ years ago although I have heard consistently good reviews about [McCarthy's Roofing](http://www.mccarthysroofing.com/).

I had my roof redone a couple of years ago by Dufour's and was completely happy with the speed and quality of their work. I'm in Halifax although I'd imagine they'd cover Dartmouth, too. I like the look of asphalt shingles; although I haven't tried a metal roof I'd be worried it'd be noisy in rain. I would expect it would cost more, although I've never bothered getting quote.

I've done more than enough roofs in my days. (Sorry, I dont do roofs anymore and dont know anyone to recommend to you, but stay away from five star roofing though) asphalt will be significantly cheaper than metal, but metal will last you your life time. It deoends if youre going to live there long for the extra cost of metal.

If getting a metal roof, definitely make sure your roofer is long established with a good reputation. When I lived out in the country I found out that one of the neighbours had it done when they saw our houses getting metal roofs. They did not use the same roofer, and went cheaper. The "lifetime warranty" disappeared as quick as the contractor when the wind lifted the roof off of the home in one fell swoop!

The asphalt shingles that are being produced now do not last as long as ones produced years ago. It's like everything, they seem to be designed to break early so you have to buy more. Combined with the labor to install them, the cost isn't any cheaper than installing a metal roof in my opinion. I have a metal roof on my place. No complaints at all. The quote I was given was lower than some quotes for asphalt. The installer has been around awhile, great rep. If you have trees overhanging your house, metal is the way to go. The shade they create leads to moss on your roof which will eat the shingles that much faster.

I installed a metal roof from Scotia Metals, the thing is indestructible, I got tired of patching asphalt shingles , do get it installed by a pro.

What about CA steel roofing and renovations? Anyone use this company before? We got a quote for a roof and were told it would be the same regardless if we went shingles or metal.
Anyone know a good roofing company? Got to get a couple shingles replaced and it looks like my previous favourite (Champion Building Services) is no more.
