[Fred's](http://www.fredsuniquefurniture.com/) is pretty good for used stuff. Open to haggling.

I just ordered a foam mattress from Amerisleep and it came to my door compressed. Popped it open and the thing fluffed up like a marshmallow in the microwave. Moral of the story, buy shit on the interwebs.

Take a look at Tennpenney Furniture, it may be a bit of a drive as its in Novi but I am really fond of their quality vs price, it's pretty decent stuff too. Also, they don't follow you around the store like they do in Artvan. They also do free delivery, but again may be a drive from downtown.

I had a mattress from Gardner White that sagged within 2 years and started messing up my back, just after their hassle-free return window ended. Recently swapped to a Casper mattress (foam, delivered in a box manageable by one person), life has been instantly better.

Make sure your credit is good before going to someplace like Art Van. I recently went to get a bed good enough for my wife and I who have developed back problems due to our 10 yr old bed and even choosing one of the lesser expensive ones with only 100 bucks a month(with downpayment), my wife and I were denied. I have a 50 k a year job now but they require a 7500 dollar credit limit check. The bed is well under that but what is a guy supposed to do. When coming from living paycheck to paycheck, my kids were just more important than paying the bills on time a few times. /sigh
