Are there any places in the area that build their own bike frames?

Quiring Cycles: http://www.quiringcycles.net or Doug Fattic in Niles offers classes in frame building; you keep your frame that you make yourself. More info on Fattics classes and others around the country: http://bohemianbicyclesfaq.wordpress.com

#1 with a bullet- East Side Bike Shop on Van Dyke in Center Line. Denny has been fixing bikes since the 50 s and knows his shit inside and out- he has a lot of really nice refurbished bikes for DIRT cheap on the sales floor and he's a good guy. Go there.

Once you purchase a bike, I could not recommend BGI downtown enough. Great group of folks working there, often times repairing small things quickly for a minimal cost or for free.

There are plenty of great local shops near downtown. BGI has a small shop downtown, but doesn't have an inventory of bikes. They can assist with questions or repair. I'm not sure if there's still a shop on Mass Ave anymore. But there was at one time. Immediately south east of downtown proper is Velo Works in Fountain Square. They have a modest inventory, but are super friendly and likely to take time with you to determine your level of comfort. Indy Cycle Specialist in Irvington, about 10 minutes or so east of downtown, has a large inventory but is still a small personal shop. They'll certainly help you out. Otherwise you might have to take a drive. Matthews on the north east side is on par with ICS as far as selection with a small shop feel. BGI north or south will have plenty of inventory, but may be busy this time of year. They'll help you find a good bike, but I'd suggest trying to work with the same sales person if you have to come back later, just to maintain the rapport.

I don't get over to them very often, but another near downtown shop is [Hashtag Bikes](http://www.hashtagbikes.com/) at 12 th and Illinois. I think they have a bigger inventory than the downtown BGI. I use the downtown BGI almost exclusively for service, and all the people in the shop are great.

Hashtag Bikes is pretty friendly, and they have fitting services.

Continental Bike on John R in Madison Heights has a good selection of Giants. There's a Cannondale dealer in Grosse Pointe on Mack near Cadieux: Bikes, Blades, and Boards. There's also a bike shop opening sometime in April in Corktown that's carrying Bianchi and Raleigh: https://www.facebook.com/metropoliscycles

D & D Bicycles in Northville is where I bought my Trek. They have (used to, not sure if still) free service on the bike for 1 or 2 years after purchase, cannot remember the specific amount of time. Any tune ups, flats, anything (with in reason, short of I ran over my bike, can I have a new one) they fix for free.
